4runner or 40?

Post by --sinner-- »

hey all, i currently own a 84 runner, and its been a great truck to me, 6inch lift, 33's etc etc...
buttttttt lately ive been getting more and more keen on a 40 SWB, found one with a 250 crossflow motor fitted and complied, with the standerd 4 speed box. looks pretty clean body wise also....comes with a bikini top.
now the bloke wants 2500 for it, wondering if this is worth it?? what do you reckon?
also with the crossflow, i figure they are pretty cheap motors to rebuild, but id probably convert to gas ( rebate, woooo) :D anyone know what the old crossflow goes like on gas? consumption?
anyone done this conversion on here before? wondering if i could fit a 5 speed later on thats all..
anyway, much appreciated all.
the debate really is, to keep the 4runner, or to grab the 40 series....or better yet, keep both (but somehow not let the missus find out lol)
cheers

The old crossflows don't last long on gas, my Dad put gas on about 6 or seven when he was using PVs for work. Though he never put head lube systems on them. He generally found that he used twice as much gas per 100km as he did petrol. So do the maths on petrol price v gas price.

I always found the xflow six to be a good motor though (owned about 5 foulcans with them).

Cheers Struth.

The 40s are a good truck but honestly yours has been butchered.

The 2Fs aren't a bad engine, and I don't think the crossflows are a better option.

As for a 5 speed in the 40, it depends on what year, but I am guessing that the one you are looking at would be early to mid 70's in which case it wouldn't be an easy swap if you could even find an approipriate 5 speed donor (rocking horse shit land here)

good rigs, but spend a little bit more and get a lot more.

why wouldn't it be an easy swap? all the sh!t usually bolts up, you just need to get longer/ shorter D-shafts made up

i beg to differ,

an engine conversion does not mean the car is butchered at all.
2500 is not to bad., the 2f is a STRONG engine, but it just dont make enough poke, the technology is to old.
a ford crossfllow is better for power and economy, but nowhere near as reliable as the 2f.

you are much better with a v6 or v8 chev. or maybe even ehem a v8 windsor.

Cause if he gets one of my age (76) then the gearbox is mounted through the bellhousing and they changed this setup at about 78-79 I think.

The 5 speed gearboxs for that model to 'bolt up' is pretty hard and then finding a bellhousing to fit the crossflow and the later model cruiser could be a big ask.

If you get a later model 5 speed and transfer case then you need to weld up the mounting brackets etc.

As for the crossflow, I personally would prefer going for a V8 or EFI but that is just me.
