3.0LT Nissan Intercoolers
How much of a differance do you think one of these would make with the small turbined turbo I have on my lux?
Basicly would it be worth it or not?

Crawling i beleive if anything it would make intake temps higher due to heat soak and therfore lower performance.
On the highway with a bonnet scoop it would have to make some difference.
The best intercooler to use that is top mount and fairly compact is a WRX water to air cooler. These run a seperate radiator that mounts in front of the existing radiator with an electric pump.

Guts, if you can pick one up at a reasonable price it will work well on your Hilux. If your using the GU Nissan bonnet scoop try to get the seal as well so that any air going into the scoop HAS to go through the I/cooler core.
Although the 3 litre I/C is fairly small at 175mm between header plates by 250 long it has a good thickness of 60mm. It's actually larger than the I/C on the new 4.2 intercooled diesel which Nissan Oz cobbled together using the I/C of the old 2.8 litre engines!
Don't go down the route of water to air intercooling as you will never get one with all the bits needed. The Subaru water/air ones actually came off the Liberty/Legacy and were prone to water pump failures, so while you may see the I/C's come up for sale it's quite rare to get the water pump also they used a pretty inefficient water radiator at the front which was in effect a large transmission type cooler not a dedicated water radiator. They are very limited in the volume of water they can recirculate through the I/C, and in water to air I/C's the key to good performance is a large water volume.
If you decide to go top mount I/C then the early GU 2.8s came with a fan underneath to draw air through the core at slow speed so that's another option for you.
Regards Andrew.
ps: Don't let people put you off about top mounts, the one I built on a blow through carby turbo petrol 4 cylinder Jackaroo really works well.

I haven`t checked it out yet but i`ve been told that a local wrecks has 3 or 4 of them left and only wants about $70 for the IC its self.
guts buy them all, and i will buy the other 2 of you, we are currently getting about 5 times that for them.

You could run it as a front mount, or even if it is over the engine, run a Davis Craig fan on it to suck cool air.
If you want ot get fancy you can have water jets like windscreen ones, that shoot water on the intercooler in a fog/spray that cools it down too, you just need a 5-10ltr or larger tank for the water.

yer, different head on the liberty though I think..
anyway, I think front mount (FM) as bruce said with water jets and thermos..
a good point that RUFF mentioned is the crawl speed factors.. you will be going slow, not much air going through the cooler, and if you go top mount, all the heat from the engine bay rises to the cooler, getting really hot and you will have really high intake temps.. not good
I would personally go a FM with water jets..

The 3.0ltr GU puts out 116kw with the intercooler
The Navara 3.0ltr put out 114kw without the intercooler.
Daz
Navara = 110kW of power and 314Nm of torque
Patrol 3.0 = 116 kW torque is 354 Nm
Patrol 4.2TD with intercooler = 114kW of power and 360Nm of torque
Patrol 3.0TD Dtronic = 133kw torque 420nm
Patrol 4.8p = 185kw + 420nm torque

Ive talked to AWILL4x4 few times about this exact thing, and you can run fans on the intercooler under it or over it to draw air thru the bonnet scoop, and with water spray you should be "ok"...
Nutha thing I saw Birdy has done is 15mm spacers on the bonnet hinges to lift the back of bonnet to allow air through... That and a couple of GTS Style scoops could be the go.
Now IM workin, I might put it to the test
