Has anyone mounted their winch control inside the cabin, obviously doing away with the hand control? See any problems with that?

due to your 80 series having a 2" body lift already, putting the switch inside tends to affect your centre of gravity, you may need to have the vehicle stability tested by Vic roads after the mod, but other than that, putting the switch inside works really well.

Also handy to have winch in and out buttons on the bar. Makes it much easier to bring in the last couple of feet of cable.

just make sure if you are going to put switches externally on the vehicle that there is a cut off key for the power to the winch under the bonnet, because there have been some instances in the past where vehicles have been winched together whilst being parallel parked and the control box has been shorted out with the cable from the 4wd wrapped around the cars in front and behind.

some guys wire the relay into the ignittion too so the winch will only work with the key on.

I've got mine mounted inside on the dash, I use a missile switch as a cut off so the winch can't be powered without the missile switch in the on position. I would also recommend mounting your control box under the bonnet for several reasons, protection from elements, theives, vandals etc etc. All you need other than the missile switch is a return to centre or momentary three position switch so on/off/on to power the winch in or out, they're available from any electronics store. I also have a switch on the grill to power the winch in and out, but it only works if you flick the missile switch to arm the winch first.

Marine shops are good for a range of weatherproof/durable switches to suit this task, eg., an on-off switch with LED indicator plus rocker switch for 'in' and 'out' and they are heaps cheaper than Rip Every Poor C Off (REPCO).

I just mounted the plug for the winch controller in side on the dash. So now I can use it inside or run the cable out the window for use out side. Also reduces mud for entering the plug and stop any one from shorting it out and using the winch. And I mounted the solenoids under the bonnet just because it looks neater.

I have the same setup. except that the solenoids are still mounted to the highmount motor, but I have also wired the the plug for the remote hand controler through the missile switch. Works tops.

I got a bit enthusiastic when I put switches inside. Put in 2, one for the driver and one for the co-pilot with red and green pilot lights to indicate which was operational. Red for port, Green for starboard! It works really well, though it still helps to have an external as well for when you are rewinding the rope by yourself.

If anyone wants a wiring diagram PM me. This is for a Warn 8274 and includes a supplementary fuse block I located inside the cab. It also shows the take off from the ACC terminal of the ignition switch.
