Innovative snorkel/inlet idea?
Has anyone ever used an after market vent put into the side of the scuttle (usualy added to aid cooling of engine bay) as a snorkel/inlet?
I don't intend to drive into water as deep as the scuttle pan as this is nearly up to the window height of the Rangie (31" tyres and 1" lift).
It seems like it would be a nice looking conversion judging by those who have done it for cooling.
I could also add one o the other side as a vent for cooling.
Any opinions or idesa would be great. Just consider that new snorkels are beyond my budget and home made ones tend to look a little shoddy.

I will be retaining the existing air box ('88 injection) and running a pipe to the vent.shakes wrote:providing you have a decent splash gaurd/water trap in it. plenty of water (wether its more or less than you std air cleaner) will get in.

Hi guys,
I thought about sourcing cool air for the engine from the plenum/scuttle when putting the latest creation together, but without a vent on the side. The existing 3 vents on the front should be big enough in area to supply enough air. The mesh in the inlets stops rain coming out the heater - it drains out the side holes in the body shell. I wonder whether the induction noise would be audible inside the car.
Didn't go ahead because I'd have to fab something around the air filter to the scuttle chamber and didn't have time. Air cleaner (A31 type) hangs off one of those alloy double elbow things used with lpg on a Chev or other V8. Remains an option for the future though, and I don't use my RR as a submarine.
On the subject of air filters - I put in a K&N A31 equivalent last week. KNOWING FULL WELL THAT THEY DON'T FILTER AS WELL AS RYCO ETC PAPER FILTERS. Big improvement in grunt and mpg. Wish I'd done it years ago. An A31 paper filter is too restrictive for a 350 Chev, in my case.

I'd suggest running the vent as an intake is leading to trouble. Although you may not want to go through water up to your windscreen I have got water onto the bonnet several times on my defender with 35's and 2" lift. Its just the splash as you hit the water, or sometimes the bow wave that is the issue
