40 series spare wheel carrier pics

I have a 47 troopy and it has never been fitted with a spare wheel carrier before. I have scored the correct wheel carrier for this model and was wondering if anyone could take some pics of theirs for me so i can use them as a guide for installing mine, or if someone already has some pics, could you post them up for me. Heres what i need, a pic from inside showing the bolt layout and one of the latchhook thats bolted on the body just under the rear left door. Thanks in advance

Not sure if the troopy is the same as the SWB but here are some pics of mine if they help. I added a latching point to help with carrying a 35" tyre as there was a fair wobble with the extra weight of the 35" causing the carrier to pivot on the bottom latch.

could you also tell me if that style of wheelcarrier can handle a bfg 285/75r16 on a sunrasia ? it looks like you have put a spacer between the part you attach the spare to and the wheel carrier itself... Again thanks very much

No probs. Yeah I had to space the carrier out to fit the 35" spare (you might have to do the same for the 285/75R16). It has no probs carring the extra weight. As you can see I just had to set up an additional latch on the top right to stop the carrier wobbling as it tended to want to pivot on the bottom latch otherwise. I have since made a new bracket to the correct offset instead of spacing the old one.

dont use the carrier as shown in the above for a heavy tyre, they bend and stretch like crazy.

Tey to get a hold of the tube style factory carrier , they are much better and more ridgid.

Trouble is thats the only one i could get, i will try this one and if it cant handle it i will fit the tube kind.... If i wanted the tube kind will the holes in the body be the same for both? Also what part bends and twists?

You may have a point Jes. I havent tried the other type. The style in the pics is the one my rig came with so I had to make do. I have never had a problem with rattling or flexing since I fitted the extra latch but you are right, prior to that it had a fair bit of movement. If you have the standard barn doors you'll be hard pressed setting up a decent latch as the barn doors are flimsy.

So is mine a factory wheel carrier while the tube type is aftermarket??

the bolts on the LHS quarter line up ( im quite sure they do, but i seem to remember opening up 2 extra holes at some stage on oen of my 40's, but that may have been for something else)

BUT, the bracketry on the rail below the tailgate is different and will need new holes.

The tube mount type has a rubber stopper and a latch.

The type that is pictured is a factory carryer, and the tube type one is a factory carrier also. I think the tube type carrier came out on the later models.

Mmmmmmm might have to re think this one... Also theres an adjustable rubber stopper on the top right hand corner of the wheel carrier, i wonder if that would stop the movement somewhat? Dont wanna go drilling holes if i might need something stronger. Thanks guys

Update..... spent this arvo trial fitting it and it looks as though it will work.
I have given a mate a call and he loves fabricating shit up so if it dont work first time, i will make the thing fit

If and when i get it finished i will post some pics up... Oh, one more thing. What colour should i paint it? Im thinking of going with the colour of the troopy, or painting it black... with black winning out at this moment (by the way its a dingy looking white at the mo )

Yeah me too!

I checked out this troopy over the weekend and he had the same spare carrier as i have and i questioned him about weather it could handle what i had in mind, and he said yeah no worries..... His does a great job dont rattle and has never bent outa shape, and he is running the same size tyres but M/Ts not A/Ts. so im gonna whack it on, and i will take some shots and post them up

Oh yeah i checked they are both factory wheel carriers the plate kind came first and was usually on shortys, the tubular came out fairly late and was used on troopys.
