2ltr inline6 swap into a 87 hilux who's done it

Post by 2roky »

i've got a 87 hilux currently running a heat seized 3y so i'm going to put a 86 toyota cressida motor (1ge) in it. was wondering if any1 has done this or not. the truck will not be going back on the road as it is being turned into an offroader.
dont follow its going to hurt

mate i havnt done much with 1ge's but i am in the process of fitting a 7mge (3litre straight 6) out of a supra into my 89 dual cab (motor is in and running but still all the little things to do). Conversion was pretty straight forward.

i think the two in terms of configuration of mounts etc are pretty similar. what did you have to do to get it to fit in your truck. also what year truck is yours and what engine was it running ie 3y,or 2.4 deisel or what? any info would help me a fair bit

Interested to hear how you go with the 1G as i'm thinking of doing the same thing..

My main concern is sump hitting the front diff.

will do if your truck is leaf sprung in the front it the diff hitting the sump shouldn't be a big problem even less of a prob if you are doing a suspension lift

My truck is a 1988 rn105 dual cab live axle. It did have a 22R and g52 gearbox. The 7mge bolted in with the 5mge supra mounts on the motor, and lined up perfectly with the 22r mounts on the chassis posts. The w58 gearbox bell housing bolted straight up to my G52 and the back of the 7mge. The supra heavy duty clutch was a perfect fit. I did have to massage the fire wall with a big f@#king hammer to clearance some areas and install a 35mm body lift. Some say you can do it without the body-lift but i cant see how!!!! it was very tight!! Other then that pretty straight forward. The wiring wasn't TOO BAD but did take some time to sort out.
The one thing i have noticed is the engine mounts (brand new) allow a lot of movement so I'm going to have to chain them down. This was my first engine swap and it all went pretty smoothly. Any other questions just ask. A little bit of advise is buy a whole car or a half cut, some parts are very hard to find if you don't!!!

ones of my mates has got a 1gtte in his 2WD lux which had a 22r weapon!!!!!!.
He used his standerd G/box and just changed the bell housing to suit the motor. he used a ST185 celica radaitor, the other thing he did was he rolled part of the firewall back near the turbos so the motor cleared.

there the things i can think of at the moment that he did

Hey sass what sort of radiator and fan setup are you running with the 7mge?
Did you fit the radiator without cutting the support out?
