i am wanting to put a 350 chev in my lux and was wondering wat cosat am i lookin at.. to get someone to put it in and buying.. how good are the 350's and now mechanic think windors 302... which is better and why

And then there are all guidlines on what else needs to be changed. Its quite an involved process with much relying on engineers discresion, ie brakes sufficient etc, but the maximum capacity cant be avoided.
In Qld 5.0L is the largest engine size you can put in. At least that is what I was told by them while looking into my conversion. Was also told this was regardless of the original engine size.

if you can put a 350 in i would be doing that, as for size of the motor, it is actually much smaller than a 253 or 308 ,45 degree V against 30 degree V so fitting it will be easy.. does anyone know if it can be done in vic, am looking at putting one in at the moment??? i have gq diffs and 80 series master..

Chev Holden V8's are 90 deg V 8's like all other V8's to get the timing correct the cylinders need to be 90 deg appart. The chev ia a lot more compact design thats why they appear much smaller. I had a 383 small block chev in my lux 15 years ago and all the running gear needs to be changed i had cruiser diffs, gearbox and transfer and it was pretty reliable. When i rolled it for the 3rd time i brought 75 ute chassis/body/pick up tray and fitted all the cruiser running gear and made a nice ute. Hilux running gear is just tuff enough for the std engines and thats it. with any more power all the reast of the runnin gear needs changin. Where did these "magic" angles come from? This is really basic stuff to get wrong. As 80ute says, just abt all v configuration motors are 90 degrees between the cylinder banks. There are probably some v8s with other angles, but not many.

ha ha sorry boys i stand corrected, that info came straight form my fit up manuel from Marks 4wd adaptors, clearly wrong, any way it is much more compact motor though, relative to out put. From 308 to 350, will engine mounts etc need to be changed, and is it legal in Vic?? cheers

in a lux i would be putting in either a supercharged or n/a 3.8 litre or a 308. as said the 350 will be too big UNLESS you get a 308 and stroke it. but also as said you will need to change the running gear

dont know much about windsors but clevos are tuff as guts.... get a 302 and chuck in a 351 crank and u have a 351. stick 2V heads on your 4V head motor and make instant torque. not to mention they also sound better (in my opinion) than chevs which sound alot more rattly.
the only bad thing ive heard brought up is the front dizzy, but that can be easily fixed with prior preparation or just making up a splash gaurd.

Yeah, gotta love the rumble of the ford v8. Theyre not a popular choice with 4x4ers or boaters because of the location of the distributor. There is no way in hell the 350 chev will fit in the engine bay without a fair bit of modification. Let alone a 302/351 clevo ( you seen the size of these monsters?? )
I live in QLD and a mate of mine has an earlier model lux with a V6 chev engine in it ( god knows why ) and there is barely enough room to change the spark plugs

The Windsor is a great engine and there's a stack of performance parts available at reasonable costs. You could even start by using a XR8 etc with 220kw's.
You don't say what year your Hilux is but if its a late model you have to put the same year or later engine in unless you go total LPG.
I estimate mine is putting out around 300-350hp at the wheels but could be more yet it will easily give me 12-13L/100 but it is modified
