Post by Mulisha »

I'm wanting to turbo my SWB 1988 TB42 carby and i'm woundering if someone puts together kits that will all bolt on then just need to tune and off you go or do you have to go around pick up bits and pieces?

If there isn't any kits out there anyone want to put up a list of things i needed ?

like ..

LIST: (Example)
Xr6 Turbo $3000 ..

Thanks for ur help!!

cveperformance.com is building a kit at the moment, maybe contact him and see when it is due.

If you have petrol carby tb42 i pretty sure you will have to swap carby to one that will work with a turbo.

If you are going straight gas and run around 10psi then you need

manifold(get one made or get a turbo diesel manifold)
turbo(between 28 to 35)
suitable mixer(gas research)
modify oil sump for oil return
boost gauge good idea

Im still unsure on the best way to handle ignition. Upgrade coil and change out points to electric setup (Msd igniton with boost retard) Anyone will know it will be artificial aspiration.

Cheers guys for the replys.

I have just put in a Ignitor ignition last week and i have 8mm leads and a GT40R coil..

My converter i think is on it's way out anyway becuase i can hear that rubber boot thing inside making a sucking noise

I think i'll give CVE Peformance a ring and see how much the kit will end up costing because there are a few other things i need to do like buy a new 115L gas tank and maybe look at replacing the sliding windows becuase mine are rusted..

Would anyone know of a rough price to get a black car reprayed in the same colour just so it fixes alot of stone chips up etc?

Thanks guys

run it on straight gas and you wont need to worry about carbys, turbos run better on gas anway

you can use the origional carby for turbo, but you have to enclose it in a pressure vessel.

build a box for the carby so the WHOLE carby is pressureised. :D

Will using just a throttle body work becuase i would run it striaght gas if need be..

So gas/LPG is 100% fine with a turbo on these engines becuase i have to buy a new gas tank and don't want to waste $800 on it and find i can't use gas becuase it's to hot or something..

Also how do these engines last with turbos on them?
I have a 3 or 4 core radiator no problem with over heating? I live in QLD LOL

Can i have air con and heating with a turbo or does the turbo in the way?

Any bad points about having a turbo over a V8?

There are alot of good points like it's cheaper and no engine mod plate etc..

Will a Petronix Igintion be ok with a turbo becuase i just put one on the car?

Thanks again

you can do a couple of things to tha manifold. you can trash the carby and mount a single butterfly straight to the carby manifold, or you can purchase an injection manifold from an injected tb42 which will have the throttlebody.

origional radiator is no dramas.

you can leave all air and steer in tact.

a turbo 6 and a v8 are different, but you have added complexity with a turbo ( complexity is no worries if you know what you are doing)

you " MAY " have more headgasket issues with a turbo tb42 on gas, but WHO CARES :D

the petronix ignition will do OK, but a programable one woul dhave been better.

Cheers mate for the reply ..

I'll go ahead and buy that gas tank and i'll start saving for a Turbo kit ..

does anyone know roughly what is a safe PSI to run on these egines and what hp/kw roughly would they be making?

Is this turbo system like doubling the power of the old girl

Cheers
