i was 3 meters to the left of the guy and the tree when it came down. the driver went to drive out couldn't get around the tree without a reverse so pushed the tree and it went down. the guy got totally hammered with the force. i couldn't look at his injuries. his foot near the ankle was COMPLETELY broken with the leg bone poking out his sock. his head had marks and blood on it.

it was horrible for the poor guy and 2 hours with you foot hanging off in a sock before the chopper got there

Was a good weekend, had fun as Navi in the blue shorty from Discovery club (HiTech 4x4.) But like someone said I would be way back, i'm spewing my 4Runner wasn't there...

I had to shoot through before the presentation, how do we find out results etc? Do they eventually post them on the Nissan club site?

I didn't get to meet/catch up with anyone as I wasn't sure who was who. Everytime I saw your truck Guts you weren't in it hehe

Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend and got home safe.
I know I had fun on my Wombats. Lots of flop-overs but lots made it too, so it worked well. Thanks to all the competitors for being such good sports I totally enjoyed running it.
The results will appear on the clubs site in the next couple of days- www.nissanpatrolclub.org . Quite a number a members were still down there today with packing up and tidying the place, so give them a chance to get home and unpackand and keep an eye for the results on the site.

Yeah it was pissing me off all weekend so I ditched it
Had a perfect 100 point run on stage 2  but then that got canned, understandably. Then had a 75 point run on stage 3 which was all I expected to get, then the whole weekend went down hill from there :bad-words: Didn`t even drive it on sunday (electrical probelms with batteries) other then to the stages and back to camp  Prob just as well too, as the rear diff was making some wierd binding and clunking noises just in that drive.

It says in the rules that the tread of the tyre should be covered by the guard/flare and this is checked to a degree. What do you do with the guys that have batwings? It is a contentious issue. We would send an awlful lot home and these would mostly be the crowd pleasers, the big boys. I suppose we try by keeping spectators back a bit. I don't know????

Yeah we had a good run of 75 in stage 2 (our first event) after doing a nice hand stand on that first drop off. From what I heard of all the cars that had a run on stage 2; 75 was a pretty good score so spewing it was cancelled. Understanding why though, hopefull the bloke makes a full recovery.

I was suprised the shorty made it up the big climb at the very start of Stage 4 too  From what I heard the amount that made it was pretty limited...

One of the only thing that shitted me this year and spose it happens every other year, but when in the line up, only saw it happen all day with one car, but the driver and nav would leave the car in the line up, lock the car and take the keys....

If your going to leave your car when in the line up, leave the bloody keys so someone can move it up for you.. FFS its not like someone is going to steal your car!

P.S and then pack the shits when they got jump'd.

/end rant

What did the driver do? Did he stay with the guy untill he left and offer him a pallet of his favourite beer like he should have? Or did he just leave and hence should we rally a lynch mob? There's too many people that act before thinking like him, you see it every day on the road.

I think we should go easy. I was talking to the Macarthur guys and the fellow is shattered at what happened. They said at the time that 'Don' was going into surgery to have his leg pinned and there was suspected cracked ribs and cuts and bruising. They did not expect any complications. Lets wait for news before you hang the guy.

I didn't mean defamation of the guy because of the injuries sustained by the victim, more the action of the driver as described by bigzook who was a witness. I'm curious as to the actions of the vehicle driver after his stupid actions behind the wheel?

If the media got wind of a hot tempered 4WD'er who can't be bothered finding reverse and ultimately squashed someone you could just imagine it.... .

or drive a green POS :finger:

on a serious note, what are the implications with insurence? will the bloke that got hit by the tree be fully covered?? if not we as a community have an obligation to raise funds to assist, can someone in the know (read miss wendy :) ) fill in a few blanks and ease our collective minds please

A few points just to clarify before everyone gets too wound up....

The driver who hit the tree did so while attempting to stay in the event and avoid a reverse (not after being disqualified) - a minor difference, but valid.

He said didn't see the guy standing where he was, and I assume didn't think he would knock the tree over, rather bounce off it and stay in the event. Perhaps not the best decision of his life....

The (dead) tree fell and glanced of a parked recovery vehicle, then onto the victim who suffered head and chest injuries and a severely broken ankle (but not quite as bad as was described further up this thread). He has had surgery to repair the break and as far as I am aware is now recovering well in hospital.

He received first aid very, very quickly from myself and another off-duty firefighter. We were quickly joined by others including a couple of registered nurses and an off-duty ambulance officer. The other firie, the ambo, the nurse and many other helpers treated his injuries as best they could, and immediately called for an ambulance and helicopter using CDMA and Sat phones.

The Careflight helicopter arrived about 50 minutes after the incident occurred and the doctor and paramedic stabilised/treated the victim, who was transported by helicopter after about another half-hour to an hour.

Well done to those first aiders ^^ and Care flight

What beats me is why the organisers had to call over the PA system for someone with a sat phone to come and make a call. Wouldn't you have one incase of emergency in a known 'no mobile service' area ?

I'm not sure about the call for a Sat phone but know for a fact that the call was made by the Nissan Clubs own Sat phone that is on hand for this type of thing. The club is well insured Public Liability wise and all will be taken care of. There was a bucket going around for Care Flight and when I saw it was looking very healthy with five and ten dollar notes so THANKS to all.

i saw the driver being told to stop and stay in the car. heaps of people came over and he was attended to whereby i left as they were tring to get room. not sure what happend with either party after that.

What you are saying is VERY WRONG. The driver concerned was crawling the turn and tried to push past the tree when he wasn't going to make it as most competitors do. He was NOT disqualified, he was still in the game until that point, he was NOT in a huff, the tree was so rotten it simply fell, there was almost no sign of where it was in the ground. It was definitely not rage of any kind and to say so is inflamatory to the situation, and gives 4wd competitions a very bad rap.

Funny you mention that; A few of us were walking around waiting to attempt Stage 1 and we were dumbfounded as we couldn't actually see where the tree fell from. We were looking for a stump obviously....

In conclusion it's just one of those freaky incidents....

I thought the issue with event 2 was well orgainised and handled by all involved. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Accidents happen, that is why they are called accidents. Lets learn from it and move on.

As for the weekend, it was great. My 3rd trials (only spectate) and the first with a club. The only drama I have is could there be a different format to who runs what event. Maybe run it via clubs this way if I am trying to watch all the cars in my club or want to follow some specific cars it is easier to keep track of them.

By Sunday I had given up trying to watch all the competitors in the club I was with. You just can not be everywhere at once. Maybe there is a reason why it is not done like that if so then so be it just my 2c worth.

I think your quite right about keeping clubs together it would be nice so you could support every one in your club and see there drives.
On the other hand though as a found my out myself it is a good way to meet and socialize with other club members.
I did however notice there was a pair who in the same club no matter were they were always followed each other on the same events. Not to mention jumped the que simply cause thats the car we started the day behind. Ever thought maybe some people got through there events quicker and hence were in the line earlier.
