p76 EFI
yes I've searched and couldnt find anything conclusive! and i really should've asked this before spending my $$
in short - I just aquired a fairly cheap and complete EFI system off an early Disco with plans on fitting mainly the intake manifold and some of the loom to my p76 4.4. (in a 83 rangey thats semi disco already)
1 - will the intake manifold be a straight bolt up or am I going to come across strife with injectors fouling etc?
2 - if it fits without too many headaches i'm also debating straight gas, will the TB in the manifold be sufficient or will i need to chop it and weld a flange to bolt say a commodore TB to it?
I will be using an aftermarket computer, pumps etc but any advice even if its completly irrevelant would be tops!
Simon.

1....It won't bolt on, you'll need spacer plates, the gap between the heads on a 4.4 is wider due to the higher deck height
If the injectors foul, a die grinder is your friend, or file if you must
2....The throttle body will be fine, but why the fark would you bother, just get a standard manifold from a 4.4, make a flange with a 3" bend and smack a throttle body on that, if you go straight gas
3....Ask more questions for more advice

Wanted: Car trailer or beaver tail truck, let me know what you got
P76 ver Rover
Somebody correct me if i'm wrong but the P76 is a lot wider in the valley
there were some Wedges or spacers available once, cost a motza however.
They were a lot of bother, always leaking, vaccum leaks.

They don't leak if fitted correctly (properly sealed).jackal1 wrote:Somebody correct me if i'm wrong but the P76 is a lot wider in the valley

if ya dont half arse the job a efi 4.4 should be a good thing.pick a good cam that makes or stuffs how the thing pulls. as for full gas, thats ok but you cant get gas at every servo, you cant carry spare gas in a jerry can and you dont get as far per liter with gas as you do with petrol.
smooth rides with power
Well now you have. I've had an EFI 4.4 and it was fantastic. Had a standard 3.5 EFI flapper system on it and no problems. Like anything you have to do it the right way and put some thought and a few $$ into it but its pretty simple to do and it turned an excellent conversion (carb 4.4) into a brilliant one.Loanrangie wrote:really not worth the hassle, i havent yet heard of anyone who has had good proven results from efi'ing a 4.4, lot a money and heartache.
I say go for it, just make sure you do it right.

i never expected to have so many replies! too lazy and un-soberish too cut n paste quotes
if i do it I'll do it properly from the general consensus everything should work a treat. with my limited knowledge the manifolds dont look overly restrictive for my motor (holden pistons n rings 20thou overbore mild headwork and a torquey cam... aprox 5ltr)
straight gas will be a pre-cursor to being able to afford a PROPER tune and set up EFI $$$$$ and I want to get my ute running and go wheeling because its sending me mad not being able to drive!!!
if anyone has the spacers I need just laying about or knows of some somewhere or even has the exact height and angles I need to get everything to line up get in touch with me!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you cant get a manifold/gasket to seal your a schmuck that needs to find sikaflex or a grinder... and straight gas is only being put off for the fact you cant just carry it in a jerry as said.... hence the reason for me buying a complete efi off a 91 disco (on a side note, pm davidh if you need any steering/susp linkages or disco interior)

I built up a 4.4 efi a few years back.
You can get the manifold spacers from Toorak Tractor in Braeside who seem to know a lot about the 4.4's.
But the better spacers to get are from a rover place somewhere down on the peninsula way (can't remember name). Much better design. I've had no problem with vaccum leaks.

I'm lost.
Do you want straight gas or efi?
If it's straight gas, then the efi manifold/injectors/fuel rail/pressure reg etc etc is wasted money.
Bolt on a throttlebody, or even use the standard p76 carby.
It's only an air flow controlling device.
If it's efi you want then what have bought is good.
Still need the spacers.
Also need a high pressure pump, or a swirl pot & extra pump.
Did you get the computer also, or are you planning on aftermarket. (oops, just re-read your original post)
Could get very expensive. Megasquirt is cheaper, but requires more knowledge and tinkering.[/i]

I did get the original ECU but will most likely use either a Delco or wolf3d for tuning.
straight gas will be to get the car on the road for a couple of months while more funds build up to spend the money on a properly set up EFI system sorry to confuse ya.... so is it safe to assume the throttle body in the manifold will be suffice for straight gas.
thanks for all the info!!!!!!!!! much appreciated

is that them?
can you elaborate why they are a better design?
I'm way over in the western burbs and cant be assed driving all that way around to find out its the wrong joint

They are better for a couple of reasons....
a) they are an angled wedge whereas the toorak tractor ones are the same thickness all the way. I found this is a better fit.
b) the rovacentre spacers bolt firstly to the head with countersunk bolts and then the manifold bolts into the spacer. IMO this allows for a better seal and fit than the TT method of just sandwiching the spacer between the two and just using the same manifold bolts.
I had TT ones but replaced them some time ago with the Rovacentre ones.

I think these are the spacers I have (however they are not wedge shaped. they have parallel flats).
Mine are bolted to the head with allen head screws which are countersunk into the spacer.
You use the P76 valley cover between the head & spacer.
Then the manifold is bolted to the spacer, however there is no gasket available.
You could butcher a Rover valley cover to get one, but I cut some out of gasket paper.
Works fine - no leaks.
Alternatively you could use 2 valley covers. A P76 and a Rover, but that's a bit expensive.

I should have a answer back on monday for people that need these spacers
as to wether a friend will be making them up as needed. Also hopefully he will be able to do the 4.4 / zf auto adapter piece as well.
So ill keep you all posted but just give us a yell on here if interested at all.
Cheers jamie
