Mods needed for vit cape trip?

Post by wokii »

I am looking at going to the cape in june/july 08 in a mid 90's vitara lwb.
I am interested in who has done it in one and what mods they had done.
Also any problems they encounted and the mod they wish they had.

I dont hav a vitara yet but i'm doin the R&D on it.
So far i think i will do a 2" body lift, 2" shock lift ,Larger tyres (31") and a snorkel.
Any thoughts?

Make sure everything is secured correctly. Also look into maybe getting your rear diff strengthened with extra bracing. Plus what the other shave said.

Also make sure you do some testing especially of what you really do and don't need for camping. Extra weight means extra strain on things. Take what you really need not what you think you might need but have never used before. Also praxtice packing and unpacking the car to ensure that spare parts etc are easily gotten to. nothing worse than having to unpack the entire car to get to something important

Depending on model maybe have to get the front diff upgrade to the steel third member, to replace the alloy one.

like spare bolts, nuts ... hoses (eg radiator hoses)
maybe fuel filters dont know how good the fuel is up there

OH a snorkle would be good too
and a foam air filter so you can clean it your self if too much dust gets in it

you don't need a big lift to do the cape in , 2" would be fine just depends if you are going to turn the vit into a toy as well . spare parts are as said before , hoses, nuts& bolts , Belts, leads and so on .. oh and a good tyre repair kit

I have a friend and she did the trip in a SWB vit, the only thing she had done was a suspension upgrade to cope with corrigations, I think it was an OME kit , some decent tyres -she had Pirelli Scorpion ATs inflated to an appropriate pressure and an air compressor to inflate if she had to deflate.

As Grimbo said take some basic mechanical spares.

BUT most of all Drive carefully and safely its not a 4by competition - you need to get home too.

Mate what do u mean by extra bracing on the rear diff? do u mean reinforcing the diff housing tube section to stop it cracking?I think i read somewhere about someone snapping there diff across the tube section up the cape.
