Magellan GPS & DiscoverAus Topo

Yeh .
I have got Both.
Exellent screen size and colours, software came on a SD card, so i have all of Australia in the XL ready to go , i just select Detail mapping as i cross boarders into other states.
Had been waiting for years for a GPS to get good enough in a hand held.
"it was worth the wait"
Very happy.

Please tell me more ....
Especially about the Discover Aus Topo ..... how detailed is it ...... how much better is than DiscoverAus Tracks ... ?
I was looking at DiscoverAus Tracks last night on my PC and could not find many of the 4x4 tracks that I go on .... Does the Topo have many more tracks?

Cannot comment on the other software, but Discover Oz topo`s tracks are very detailed, all the tracks that i drive in Vic are supported on the software, i tried to fault it by entering some of the minor track that i drive that are missing from the Rooftops Maps, but they are able to be found by using the Alphabetical search!
Have not driven a track that i have not been able to locate on the gps yet!
Time will tell.

A computer guru that I know recommended the following as the best available:
"The Discoveraus Topo map with meridian GPS would be the ultimate compact package for 4wd at the moment".
http://www.lakecomm.com.au/gps.html
http://www.redlands4wd.com.au/discoveraus_topo.htm
Not had the chance to pursue it yet though.

Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
I have the Explorist 600 with Discover Aus Topo, use it in my 4wd and on my dirt bike, its been great, all the tracks that I can access by 4wd are on the maps, except obviously tracks at you are not meant to go on because they were made by bush wreckers, as for on the bike, I would say 90% of them are on the gps as well. Some of the smaller ones are not, but again perhaps they are not tracks we are meant to be riding on.
Where abouts are you located, the areas I use it are in VIC like around Bunyip, Gembrook, Neerum Sth ect.
If you are in VIC and on this side I can give you a demo, I can also supply them, just drop me a PM.
My unit is testimony to the quality of the magellan and the punishment they can take. Its got a few battle scars in it from the odd fall off the bike, but its still running A1.
Cheers

I have an Explorist 600 as well. I've been looking at the Discover Aus Topo but haven't committed. This info is good. I'll probably go and get it.
I also bought the 600 so it fits in my Camelbak on the dirtbike. They are a great unit. I'd recommend them any day. Don't know much about the performance of the AA battery system that they use in the XL.

I run a 600 with the discover aus toppo. great the only thing i hate about it is nextdestination the company that does the software. When i purchased it i was told i could use the maps on my computer to plan routes and the like, or for live tracking.
since november 05 they have said next month, soon. recently they have told people they will never supply the program to use the mapping on a computer because of piracy issues. so now i have a 400 peiece of software i cant use to its full potential.
if anyone has any Fixes legit or not please PM me because im at my wits end.
also i believe there was talk of a class action or massive complaing against next destination for false advertising and a few other things relating to the software.
otherwise great system

WTF !!!! you cant view the DiscoverAus Topo on the PC ??? is that for real?
Thats the craziest thing I have hear about them.....how you meant to plan trips...?
Maybe you wil have to use the DiscoverAus Tracks CD with Mapsend lite, mae your waypoints then upload it to unit. Proplem is that that version is missing so much its hard to plan routes for offroading.
Has anyone tryed making a back-up copy of the Topo SD card? you would hate to loose it at that price....

Actually thinking about it...try using mapsend lite (the new software on magellan site...and is free) to upload the Topo SD to your PC. I noiced that you cant save maps with that interface so perhaps thats what its release is used for i.e...to display the DiscoverAs Topo, I think that might be there solution?

I believe its very hard for the average user to back it up, and be able to use it.bluemu wrote:

Went up to the field days in Orange NSW yesterday and got offered a great deal on the XL and Aus topo. $1275 and it's mine. Prob was I don't have $1275. I had a go at the nextdestination guy about the pc issues. He said it's all been fixed now. He had a demo set up of the 400,500,600 and XL. Very impressive. May go the 600 when I get some $$$$

otherwise how hard/exxy is it to get maps for a FX324
cheers for any info on em.

Scale?
Depends how much you are zoomed in or out.
A paper map has a scale because it is always the same size (like 1:50000) A GPS can be zoomed changing the scale every zoom level.
Are you talking in general terms like large scale, detail scale etc?
For those who already have it,
What are the contour intervals on DiscoverAus Topo?

I think down to 35mt or 5mt.
I found a lunch box on the other side of brisbane just with coordinates. On my Explorist XL with topo it was an exact hit.
Not Bad hey.
I ve got 1 of these units for sale....email me if interested bluemu@tpg.com.au
BTW...you should be able to save regions off DiscoverAus streets and tracks (not topo) and then transfer them to the FX324. Memory is an issue as is the hassle of having to swap your SD cards all the time, and having to split your maps into so many pices.
DiscoverAus topo with explorist is great because everything is there in one storage device. You can then hook it up to a notbook and use it in your fourby if you wanted to. I find the XL screen size big enough.
If you did want to spend that much you could just use the DiscoverAus Streets and tracks with the XL, then you just need the unit.
