Soft top for a GQ shorty

Post by justinshere »

Hey,

Thinkin of choppin the GQ shorty into a ute but i still want to retain the rear seat.
Is there anyone the can make a soft top, the same as whats on sierras?
Pics of some on GQs would be awesome.

Im mainly concerned with how its attached to the car and how its sealed from the weather.

Cheers Justin

i think the closest you will get looks wise is mq shortys. alot of people take the caks off of them and put on a soft top

I think AUS4WD had a SWB Mav that was chopped to a wellside and had a soft-top. Not sure how it attached or how water-tight it was. Rear doors were turned into drop down tail-gate.

Was powered by a turboed 3L Commo engine from memory.

Glen Binskin used to have a navy soft top shorty gq, before he rolled it and swapped it for a ute body. I can't for the life of me find any dang photos of the thing on the internet, it used to look very sexy. I think it is in one of the outback challenge dvd's, prolly the 99 era.. Bogged would know I think he knows these things..

He did the usual chop you do when turnin it into a tub-ute. Take the roof off from the b-pillars back (Ithink it is b pillars), and he cut a sunroof above the cockpit. For a softop he got a FastBack Torneu made up, which I think looked really nice in comparison to the aus 4wd jeep look.

As for keeping the soft top on, it was a heck of a lot of those press studs.

Theres been a couple compete in the OBC with soft top shorty's.
Jeff Redman used to have a soft top. Seen it down the Otways not long after it was done. Had a full cage for the rear and the seats where still there. Think it was blue back then.
Also John Howorth had a Green swb (I nearly brought it but someone got in before me). Now he comptetes in a twin cab GQ. Was converted cos it fall over at his first attempt at the OBC.

Only other one I can think of is the one that AUS4wd built, with the turbo 3lt petrol in it. pretty sure there a user on here, But not sure on there user name.

I was looking to do the same, cutting the whole roof off the GQ and leaving the back style side but didn't know what to do with the windscreen, ie support and stuff.

There was a GU ute at the nissian trials that had the roof cut off and the windscreen was supported by the roll bar wouldn't mind some pics of that to study a bit more closely

but not sure about the soft top part but any canvas place should be able to do a custom job for ya

keep us posted

cheers

pretty sure he is only talking about cutting it off at the b-pillar mate, leaving a roof over the front seats, just like an MQ.

Glenn Binskins was how you are mentioning it, however he cut a hole out in the remaining roof to get a sun roof type thing going on. This got covered in canvas and the back got a fastback torneu it looked hot.
