HOW MANY KMS' IS TOO HIGH?

Hi, im new to here and to 4w drives.
Im looking at getting a 1999 Mitsubishi Triton ute, which has the same 3.0 litre motor as the challenger.

The cae im looking at is petrol and has done 270,000kms.
My question is how many kms is this type of motor good for?
how much longer can it last?

@ 270 k's that engine will need a rebuild.I would not get it as a full rebuild will cost you over $3,000 easy.

That is a huge distance for a 1999 vehicle!

The amount of life left in it will depend on how well it's been serviced. The engine is a 6G72, first seen in Oz in the late '80s, as a 12 valve version in Pajero.

There are examples of that engine still running past 400k km, but that doesn't mean all will.

I'd have a good long look at the service records. If they can't produce any, consider the motor to need replacing, and factor that into your negotiations - I'd knock $5k off the price, and PUT IT ASIDE for replace/rebuild.

If service records are good (including timing belt and water pump change at 200k km) and you're still keen, consider paying for an oil test - you organise it, you pay for it, you get the results sent to you. Just in case they've added something to disguise a smoky engine (I presume they can test for that? If not, give it an oil change yourself. ;) )

The drivetrain should be OK if it's been looked after. Look for signs of off-road abuse (lots of dents and gouges in chassis/underbody components) then the usual rust, oil leaks, worn suspension and steering components - all the usual things you'd look for in a 270k km vehicle.

Its used as a work vehichle, and has a few good dents on the tub, doesnt have service history and its going for $6,500.
Wonder how much a motor ould be if it needed replacing any time soon.

as the Japanese say 'Mitsu vely expensive to repair Mr Marz san' - no offence meant to our Japanese cousins but these motors (and indeed all Mitsu products) and your wallet contents are dependant on service hisotry, and the more the better. I would not touch it unless you've got 5k spare to cover a possible rebuild.

At 180,000K the 3 litre is certainly getting to an age where a re-build is on the cards in the next 20-50,000ks depending on service/life history.

Hey Scott (or anyone else) can you point me in the direction of a place that does the oil tests please.
I remember a couple of years talking to a company that you could buy a kit off and post it back to them, or along those lines, but I can't remember who it was. Or even better if someone knows a place in sydney that does it.
I'm going to change oils from caltex GTX diesel to castrol CXJ and want to test them for a comparison.
