5 speed in gasoline MQ
5 speed in gasoline MQ
I have a 5 speed from a MQ diesel and want to put it in my MQ with L28 engine. Is it just plug and play or do I have to relocate my mounts. And what about the input shaft?
Patrol 2.8 '84, twin carburators, Z-car header, 280ZX cam, SPOA, ARB lockers f+r, Ramsey winch, 33" Maxxis Mudders and some rust....
From what I've heard/read/know the bell housing is different, on the petrol (gasoline) engine it is larger. I don't know about the input shafts but I have a chassis with diesel running gear(5spd) but an l28 in it. It looks asthough the mounts were redrilled a bit further back. The chassis is sitting beside my swb mq diesel 5spd and the bellhousings are different.
God of Magnificant Ideas!

Dump the diesel belhousing and fit the one off of ya 4 speed to the 5spd

The front input shaft from the diesel box is shorter so you'll need to make an extended spigot bush to pick up the gap.
3/
Sorry ...... gearbox mounts require changing.
4/
Sorry again ......
front driveshaft needs to be lengthened approxamatly 120mm
Rear shaft needs to be shortened approxamatly 120mm ( depending on spring sag or spring lift & / or SOA )
5/
You'll either need to 'slot' the gearshift hole in the floor OR change over the top covers on the gearbox ( gearstick on the diesel comes out at the rear of the gearbox not in the middle as it does in the std L28 4 spd box ).
6/
Crossmember under the front shaft WILL hit after the conversion so you'll HAVE TO MOVE IT BACK 150mm.
7/
Maybe some issues with the hydrolic hose from the clutch master to the slave ( length on some models are signigfinatly shorter than others )
Allow a Saturday & a Sunday with a compentent mechanically minded mate assisting to complete it all..... Thats FULL DAYS TOO + night work aswell .... no beer stops included !
&
You'll definatly need an engine crane to lift the gearbox in and out of the rig as they are PHUCKIN HEAVY AS !
The good news is the handbrake cable and speedo cable wont need to be modified

Re: 5 speed in gasoline MQ
I put a 5 speed from a diesel into my P40 petrol and the change was definitely worth doing. The problems Kingy points out are real but not insurmountable.
Another problem not mentioned is that the transverse bash plate no longer protects the drive shaft brake unless you reposition it which I did not do. The result is increased interference between the dirt guard and the brake drum. Eventually I removed the dirt guard entirely.
A crane would be a great help but I have managed quite well with ropes through the lever hole and a strong "samson" ( a purpose built solid wooden cradle bolted to an old rotary lawnmower chassis). It pays to raise the truck off the floor to give you more room underneath. I used railway sleepers. But a crane would be the preferred way.

True but not necessarily so depending on whether you have a spring lift or not. I did my swap about 5 years ago and though the shaft was close it did clear the cross frame even with the axle hanging off the springs i.e. at maximum extension. BUT 12 months ago I broke a front leaf and replaced both front springs but not the rear which were OK. Now the stiffer front springs have thrown more weight onto the rear springs which have started to sag and my front drive shaft, I have just noticed, has scored the cross member to a depth of about 6mm. So if you have a spring lift you may not have a problem but keep an eye on it.V8Patrol wrote: 6/

We shortened the short drive shaft between the gearbox and tranny to accomodate the extra length of the 5 speed gearbox. So you can leave the transfer and everything else standard. L28 engin, 4 speed bellhousing, 5 speed box, shorter prop (slip joint and ubolt with flange), transfer (tl100). Hope this helps.
