Rear g-box seal

On a recent trip I sprung a leak from my gearbox, its the seal at the rear where the tailshaft goes in. Has anyone replaced one before? If so is it a bitch of a job or not? I put up a couple of pics from that trip in the pic thread if anyones interested. Got some mad wheel lift :twisted:

Is it the seal leaking, or the welsh plug in the slip yoke?

Good question, Ill have to get under and take a closer look tomorrow. I only had a quick look under today, tailshaft, rear muffler and diff are coated in gear oil.

If it's the same as our 95 Paj, it's easily. Just take out the tail shaft, jack up the back to stop oil escaping, or drain TC oil, take ofF shield, prise out seal and tap in new one (21 dollars), refit shield etc.
Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times

How much lift have you?, increased lift reduces engagement of the tailshaft allowing it to work on the rear bush and hammer the seal

Ive got heaps of lift, got gu patrol springs in the rear. I say that that is what caused it. would a spacer on the diff end of the tailshaft help prevent it happening again?

Yes, but you need to check the bump stops as if the springs bottom you may punch the D/S thru the transfer
