Engine Numbers would be the only thing, and then goto somewhere like Autobarn asking for parts for a 305 chev with that #. THats how it works with bikes if you dont know the year, the prefix on the engine #.

get the engine number and try to ring up a professional chev shop and they will surely tell you what year
if it is fuel injected it would be from 1990 onwards

on the back of the block , near the back of the inlet manifold
is a clock shape casting !!!!

buy a chev specialist rebuild book , or borrow one , & you can work out the build date !!!!

& possibly where it was produced !!!!

I THINK !!!! :D

Weird to think of a chev as an "import" :)
The 305 Is in my opinion one of the most bulletproof engines chev has made. 305 is the same block as a 350 that is used in 80 & early 90 model carvettes, camero, and firebirds. the only diffrence is smaller heads and pistons, etc. The 305 doesnt have the power of the 350 but it is a more reliable engine. I had one in a 83 Model station wagan that had 300,000 miles plus on it and it was the rest of the car that died not the engine.
The 305 was used for Family cars and work trucks......."cars and trucks that you needed and could depend on starting every time you turned the key"

There is a 304 its a ford product Stick with Chev its lots easier to work on then ford. I have a brother-in-law that works at the ford dealership and he would rather work on a chev. The only up side to ford would be that you could use metric tools to work on it Not a chev. its all American.
Realy it just comes down to prefrence.. But here in the US were almost every car at the drag strip has v8's in them the chev small block is king. Its just realy easy to push more HP out of them.
