don't know anyone down there in vic bloody toria. the 1 and 2 synchros are spendy though, could be better to pick up a second hand or reconditioned unit? stick an ad on the 'wanted' board.
guessing a rebuild would start around $500, plus parts, plus the crawler gears you might as well put in there while it's out ;)

The best price I've managed to get is from Gympie 4x4:
"Glen,
Thankyou for your enquiry - gearbox kit - $330, transfer case kit -
$242, synchro rings - $27.50 each. All prcies include GST. Delivery to
Melbourne would be about $16.50 post, or $21 for an airbag.

I've got a 5 speed with a stuffed input shaft bearing that I'm about to do up. Considering that secondhand and reconditioned g/boxes are dear as gold, I'm rebuild it. Another option is to obtain all the bearings from a bearing supplier. Some of them even sell the kits also. Make sure you get the correct seal for the g/box to transfer case, as this commonly fails in early 5 speeds.
I have managed to get a copy of Toyotas complete overhaul procedure for the gearbox. I've been told that you need some good quality pullers and also some bearings are pressed on and off with lots of force. Unlike an Aussie 4spd, a hammer and a socket won't be good enough!
I noticed that the Haynes manual doesn't cover the overhaul procedures. It stated that it should be left to the experts. My brother is a motor mechanic and worked on these vehicles in an open cut coal mine. He says they are straight forward, just put everything back in the way it came out.
Good luck,
Cheers, Glen.

yeah i know a bloke who is selling a 5spd fully rebuilt for 1000 but it was rebuilt 2 years ago
i want to put in some reduction gears as well
how pricey are they?
i run 33"s and i just want the engine to hold its load on climbs etc
i normally have to drop it back 2 or 3 cogs when i cruise up a hill
i realy wanna get rid of that
do you just rip out the old gears and put the reduction geras in?
thanks for your help

the gears are about $1500+ from Marks, I don't think the other crowd is selling them any more.
it is easier to install them with the gearbox/transfer assembly out of the truck unless you have a chassis hoist handy as the transfer has to be assembled on the back of the gearbox - unlike patrol/hilux/80 series you can't pull the transfer in one piece from late 4x -> early 7x series cruisers. you can replace the transfer gears without special tools but it is made millions easier with a press and gear pullers. there may also be some clearancing to do inside the transfer case to fit the bigger gears, I know this is necessary with the patrol but not sure about the cruiser.

the reduction gears go in the transfer case, there are no alternative ratios available for your H55F transmission, it already has a fairly low 1st gear of 4.843:1.
there are alternatives, you could change your differential ratios (currently 4.11:1, 4.56 and 4.88 are available) but once again not too cheap at around $800 per end if you do the work of pulling the diffs yourself, but you could recover some of that by selling your old gears - same for transfer gears, your old transfer gears will be worth something to someone providing they are in good condition.
cheers
