60 vs 80 diffs

60 vs 80 diffs
Going to put one of the 2 under my lux.
Thoughts on the 2 please.
My thoughts at the moment are go with the 60 series diffs. I have a few reasons for this.
1 the longfields I have will fit.
2 the cross over high steer I have will fit with longer tie rod arm and drag link.
3 bigger stronger front centre and interchangable with the rear so only need one spare.
Width is the same as I have now with my wheel spacers and will fit under the tray without any changes.
4 the only draw back I can think of is I have to buy 2 new air locks instead of only 1.

80 cvs are stronger (but you don't kill standard longs, so less of an issue).
60's centers are further offset, 80's are centered (probably suit hilux shiate better)
80 front diff is probably strong enough with the airlocker (your brother doesn't kill them)
you lose diff clearance whichever way you go.

what about gq
if you go 60 series what will you do with the rear offset? you will probably have to move your fuel tank and go to a one peice rear shaft if you havn't already.
my idea would be to make a centred rear housing using 60 series centre and maybe custom axles if need be.

If you're thinking an 80 for larger cv's but you'll get the weaker cw&p then perhaps consider doin a knuckle swap on a 60 housing with 80 outer knuckles and brakes etc and run their larger cv's and 30 spline axles.

Made up a centred 60 rear housing for my lux 15+ years ago and all i had prob's with was the custom axles + the $$$$$$ for them. I ended up with cruiser gearbox/transfer, 60 rear diff and custom 60 front with 80 c/v's axles, brakes etc etc. Started making up custom rear housings for lux's with cruiser pumpkin grafted into hilux axle tubes and have made over 50 of them over the years but if you want bigger axles go a GQ disc to disc and that works a treat just watch your ratio's if runnin a toyota front diff.tuf045 wrote:if you go 60 series what will you do with the rear offset? you will probably have to move your fuel tank and go to a one peice rear shaft if you havn't already.

THERES ONLY ONE SUBSTITUTE FOR CUBES AND THATS MORE and if you want more inchs stroke it !!!!!!!!!!!
Why not run an 80 rear with 60 front? I personally couldn't see you running datsun parts under your Hilux.
The 4.1's would probably suit your gearing a little better. This way you get the strength and centred rear. This way your weak link will still be in the same spot (front inner axles). This could obviously be over come.
Custom diffs, custom axles etc just end up a PITA in the long run as you can rarely borrow a custom axle at an event.
Or you could buy my spare GQ diffs

I`ll be running GQ diffs under my buggy and that is ONLY because they were free. I wouldn`t put them under my lux even if I was payed to. Why? because stock is all you get. You can`t build them stronger like you can cruiser diffs and yes Nissan diffs do break. As stock vs stock go the nissan ones are stronger but once you build up a toy diff it ends up stronger.

have been told late 80 rear brakes will bolt up, is this correct?

Are you busting your current front diff set up? I don’t see the point in putting an 80 front end in there, unless you’re purely after the width. If your only busting your back diff, I’d go with a 60 diff, for the same reasons mentioned above-Cheap, versatile etc etc. Also, I have seen a few diffs now, with 10mm dowels to “helpâ€

Hey guts why not run the combo i have 80 front and IFS rear hilux.
you can interchange centers from front to back and the rear axels are strong
I know your consern with the cutting of the tray but you already have the hilux centers and and you can leave the rear track 2" narrower and just bolt it up.
Run our x link on the front with the 80 diff and save on the hassal with the 5 link.
