Transfer case gears

Post by 410sierra »

I'm looking at getting some reduction gears for my transfer case

but my problem is I have a 1984 1 litre case with a 4wd light switch

and cant find any gears to suit it.

Does anyone know of any?

Would 1.3 litre reduction gears fit into mine?

Thanks Brad

On the information that you have provided any low range gear set will fit, even standard 1.3 gears will fit (though they would be a higher ratio).

yeh im pretty certain 1L cases with the switch are the same casing as the 1.3L just different internals and flanges.

I just got an email back from Rocky Road Outfitters and this is what they said

"The gears will fit in your transfer case. However, your tcase is 12% lower than the regular Samurai tcase. So you would just take both the high and low range numbers and reduce them by 12% to get your final gear change."

so i take it that they will fit :D . I just didnt want to spend the money and find they dont fit

that sounds spot on to me....percentage change in gearing will be less in a 1L case but hey.....still the same low range gearing in the end. Can I make one point though. 1L cases with the switch are reasonably sought after compared to 1.3's. I was in the exact same position as you as I had been using a 1L case before I bought my gears and I sold my 1L case for $250 and you can pick up 1.3L cases for about $50. I would think about this if you arent likely to swap back in the near future or havent just rebuilt the case. Can understand its a bit of fiddling around though for a couple of hundred $$ but just thought id mention it.
