Smokey Turbo Deisel?

Post by GUEEY »

Hi Guys.

Looking for some advise!

Followed the wife home tonight after the kids had done there swimming.
She was driving our recently bought 1999 GU TD42T Wagon.
as i followed i noticed it seemed to blow blackish smoke most on the time and and when heavey trottle was used the smoke increased.
It has recently had a Turbo upgrade done ie. Exhuast, boost, tune.
i dont remember it being that smokey before.
the truck has just ticked over 115,000 Ks.
Is the smoke because of more fuel added to the upgrade or could it be injectors.
it doesnot use oil of the dip stick.

it is my first Deisel after many petrol 4BYs so i am in need of some advise.

Thanks

Grant.

It appears that whoever tuned it could have adjusted the fuel to much. Heaps of go? You will also be using more fuel if it is blowing black smoke all the time. It would pay to put a pyro on and check exhaust temp if over 500/550 deg under full load, they have adjusted the fuel to high, hence black smoke.

A diesel will blow out black smoke under load, but will clear when load is taken off. You will see what I mean when you follow a truck.

I had a 3" mandrel bent exhaust fitted with a dyno tune increasing fuel and turbo boost early last year.

Thought I was very happy with it until people keep telling me I've been blowing smoke. So I went to another 4x4 diesel dyno and had it redone propertly.
Amazing how much more power I have when done properly. Power is more prominent across the entire engine rev range, and it doesn't blow smoke. My fuel usage is around 12l/100 thats with 35" tyres.

Apparently there's more to correct tuning than adjusting the fuel screw. My car was overfuelling which will damage the engine.

The power increase is great underfoot. From 1600 rpm it just pulls away hard. I suggest to get your truck checked again especially if its overfuelling as it will do damage to your engine. Ray who did mine is very experienced and he'll be happy to offer suggestions over the phone. PM me if you want his details.
Cheers.......4by.
