I am set to finish my 1UZ conversion very shortly (everything but wiring by Monday - wiring when Scott can get to it ;( )

I learnt you are best to buy an engine plus everytyhing else instead of the front cut.

I found a unique deal so am unsure if that rule always applies.

Mine will have cost me up to 9k (need to go back to my budget and have a look) but that includes a few things that could have been cheaper. Could probably have done it for 7k or so if I wanted to.

This question is purely because I do not know - with all the conversions you guys describe above - can it really be done from go to wo for less than 7k? I trhought that was cheap.

just a thought.... why not use a 1kzt engine. It's a turbo diesel. It's the engine they put in the 90 series and prado before they added efi to the diesel. So it's mechanical injection instead. If you want to climb up hills it's more torque than HP that's needed in my experience. I've had this engine in my 70 series and it was a little belter. Wouldn't win a traffic light derby but it'd climb every mountain without fail.

When I was looking, I found a 1kz front cut for 5990. Very expensive.

I'm going to drop a 1GGE in mine, and then chuck the SC14 supercharger on it.

You can get a 1GGZE .. I'm just doing mine a bit arse end about as I already own the 1GGE and would prefer the 1GGE inlet manifold with TB after the supercharger instead of the factory 1GGZE TB before designed one.

whats costing $9k in your conversion clown boy? how much was your:

engine?
exhaust?
wiring?
adapters?
mounts?
steering/air hookups?

just out of curiosity

I dont know much about those lexus v8s but a fella told me you can develop more power and tourque out of those then a 351 cleveland?doesnt sound write but id be keen to know if its true.

If you send me your email I will send you my costs spreadsheet. It includes everything except incidentals (hoses, oils, wiring, etc)

I was lucky because I bought alot of the stuff from a guy who was doing the same conversion but had to stop when 95% done as he found out the body was a stat writeoff.

The costs where not too different from what it would have cost me anyway but the effort was gone for things like making my own engine mounts.

My spreadsheet is on my laptop at work but will post detail on here also, tomorrow.

Yeah, it's true. But at the same time, you can make a 1.5L mirage engine go as quick as a 351 if you spend enough money on it. (OK, maybe a bad comparison, but you get the point)

351 Clevo, single cam 2 Valve per pot.

Lexus, quad cam 4 valve per pot.

Technology = power.

But I think you would need to supe up the lexus a bit to outdo a full house Clevo :lol:

I also want to do an engine conversion on my lux but dont know weather to go a v6 ecotech or a injected 5lt,i figure if i go the v6 ill still run my manual box but if i go the v8 ill have to go the auto,id rather the auto but then the conversion starts to get dear.

earlier crummydore v6s vn,vp,vr are better for 4wdrives, they are only 125 - 130kw but are very punchy with it's delivery, they have a torque spread which is low in the rev range

later crumpledore v6s vs,vt,vx have a bit better fuel economy and 145 - 151kw but make your car go no faster than the earlier crumpy v6 engines as the torque is higher up in the rev range, and are harder to use in conversions since they run tranny control modules & BCM's and crap

1UZ half cuts from imported coronas and cressidas come in at around the $1400 mark if I remember correctly, fantastic engine, one of the most over-engineered engines for the era, very cheap for what you get, incredibly durable
- all alloy v8
- quad overhead cam
- 4 valves per cylinder
- 6 bolt main caps
all in all a very nice engine, but torque range is quite high up in the rev range

my '87 4runner has a vr v6 in it with turbo 700 using marks adaptors and it goes great, plenty of grunt, I did mine the easy way, I bought it already cooked

Bulls*t.
Comparing apples with apples by using a base spec GT 351, which is only a 351 with a 4barrel and a very pissy cam etc etc it would smoke the arse of a base 1UZ. Torque is what its all about and in real life a Clevo's got more grunt than a pigfarm compared to a base 1UZ.

You would have to spend some very serious dollars on a 1UZ to compete against a lesser dollar well modded 351 and the same comparison would even apply to a 302W.

Thanks for the photos and the advice on your v6 but i think the 5ltr has one me over,there is a guy on oz forrum i think its called that is half way through this conversion but for the last couple of nights its been down so im keen to follow him.When we left ormeau on the weekend my apprentice and i lined up side by side he was in a nissan swb 4.2 petrol on 37s and i was in a 2.8 turboed hilux on 35s i lost by 4 car lenths and have to here about it 9 hours a day, so hence the reason for my conversion. :armsup:

Technology = new ways car manufacturers cut emissions while trying to keep old power outputs.

If you want power- choose the old V8's (esp. chev/ clevo/ windsor)- dollar for dollar nothing compares.
If economy go a diesel.
Everything else is a compromise in between.

In his situation I'd stick a new 3y in for $1350. Or if the moneys there wait a bit and look for a secondhand conversion- a v6 commodore complete conversion for under $2500 would be nice.

Everyone believe's the ecomony of the Diesels will out do the petrol V8's but if you set it up right you will have the best of both worlds. I had a much modified diesel turbo before swapping to an "old" iron block Holden V8 and it''s turned out to be identicle on fuel useage if I'm giving the right foot a bit of a hammering and about 5 times the power !!! but If I just cruise along and let the V8 just work it's magic in the 2000 - 3500 rpm range then I get better economy than the wifes commodore, and thats on petrol but I'm nearly always on LPG .
I run my car with 35's all the time and tow a trailer 90 % on road time.
I also have 2 mates with the Lexus V8's in them (1 has a Surf like mine & 1 has a dual cab) and they are good but they both have to rev harder all the time and they lack the low down torque that mine has which means alot when in low range.
That said though they are a great motor for a 4by and sound grouse too but if you start to get into dirty deep poo (mud & water) then timing belt, pulleys and electricals are the weak links whereas my trusty old iron block runs an electric dizzy thats been water proofed and big boots on the spark plugs and I have played in the river a few times with no problems and parts are cheap as and easy to get.
As I've said in other posts it all comes down to what you want and how you want to use it.
The V6 is a good motor too that gets up and goes but the economy seems to be a bit worse that the V8's (they don't sound as good either - but I'm biased).
