Basic auto wiring help needed...............................
Have rcentley rebuilt the ski boat engine, which is a cleavland 302.
Problem is the wiring loom is stuffed.
Can anyone help with a schematic or wiring diagram.
Need only connect the following.
1. Battery
2. Starter motor
3. Alternator
4. Coil
5. Distributor.
6. Tacho.
Also where should I install fuses and what size?
Thanks
Burnsy

it goes to a charge light. The other side of the charge light goes to switched pos (coil) off the ign switch.
I recently did a diagram for a mates 454 boat. I'll get it off him and post it up (or get off my arse and draw it again for you)

Ex-Army - SeriesIII -186s - NP435 - Maxi rear - megasquirt coilpack ignition - AM FM radio with 2 X speakers
It's got something to do with initiating a field in the alternator; fine details escape me at the moment.bruiser wrote:so does this need to be connected to make the system work properly or is it just to provide an indication on the dash?
A diagram would be awesome mate..............
thanks

Some systems will work OK without it, others won't. I don't know what the odds are.
Good luck,
Scott
Not sure if needed or not but what scott said makes sence. IMO put it in. I've got an illuminated push button starter on my rover - the globe in the switch is the charge light - love it.bruiser wrote:so does this need to be connected to make the system work properly or is it just to provide an indication on the dash?

You're lucky - my misses is watching E farkin R, so I've nothing better to do than draw up another. (gonna be rough though).

Rough? Yes. But it looks like a F'n good start.
Perhaps indicate +/- on the coil? And the earth connection on the coil - I've only ever seen that as a dizzzy body to engine block earth. Do any engines use a separate wire? A potential point of confusion...
You show a V-block. Will the same diagram work for an in-line motor?

C'mon dude - we weren't talking about having engineers understand it!F'n_Rover wrote:Happy now, fixed it up so even engineers can understand.
Before an engineer can understand it:
- specify in a note that the voltage regulator is internal to the alternator.
- indicate that some alternators may have (and indeed, work better with) a separate voltage sense line connected to the battery.
- indicate that coil connections are to the TOP of the coil can, not the sides.
- define minimum cable specs for "BIG MOFO CABLE" - because they won't have come across that description at university.

Then it sould get passed no probs..................
