GU Patrol Vs. Toyota Prado

Post by iwanahuma »

Strictly a touring question, how do these two makes stack up against each other in terms of fuel economy and weight?

3.0L Turbo diesel Nissan ST
3.0L Turbo diesel Prado GXL

I would say they are similar in spec, and the price is also similar. Prado would be older style same with GU.

Anyone know of any further specs?

Are you selling either of these cheap? ;)

Are you talking new, or secondhand? If secondhand, how old do you want to go?

I would expect the Prado to be smaller and lighter than a Patrol.

I'd also be a little concerned about the reputation of the Patrol's 3 litre engine - have Nissan acknowledged a problem yet?

My father has a '99 model Prado which he uses for touring, and it does everything he needs.

As said before, The Patrol is a more hardcore track 4x4, the Prado is a nice touring 4x4.

There is often talk on here about the Nissan 3L diesel... :?

Handling wise the Prado should have it hands down. Slightly lighter, IFS for great handling. Also Toyota produce better engines and gear boxs. There engines have more power and there gearboxes are lighter easier to life with.
Also the Prado has the coil/strut so just as easily set up as a full coil suspsion (i think).

Patrol maybe slightly larger. Larger cab, maybe lower floor hieght. But pretty sure lower roof hieght, if your ever to use a roof rack.
I would go the patrol cos I am a nissan person and am stubborn.
But I would assume that it would be more stable. Less susp type bushes to wear out. So from a maintenace point of view the GU should be easier. Also the later series GU's don't have the same ZD30 as the earlier ones. As they did a large number of changes. wether this is just marketing hype or not I am not sure.

Prados diesiel is old tech and slow. Handling wise the Patrol would outhandle the Prado when cornering. Offroad the Patrol will shit all over a Prado and the rear Lsd on Prado is useless.
My brother has a Prado, I have a Patrol , the Prado is has better paint and build quality though.
Oh and mine is a 3lt 04, yet to have a problem, and have done 80000kms. But like all diesels, I change the oil and filter evey 5000kms!
you know you want one

putting these two vehicles in the same sentence is SACRILAGE.
prado you can( TRY to ) compare with the pathfinder,
and the 100 series try's hard to compare to the Patrol.

A Prado on 35 Simex, locked front and back that will destroy any similar specced Patrol in the tough stuff, and make it look boring as bat sh.t as it does it that easy.

FUEL economy is my primary concern.

I am interested in buying one of these vehicles, using it as a daily driver for four months, and setting it up, drawers, locker(s) UHF, Radio, tyres, etc..

Then my plan is to drive it around the country taking 12 months and maybe longer. I plan to sleep in it when there is no other accomodation. I just want to get a comparison as they are both turbo diesel 3.0L which sounds economical.

i think u will find the prado does about 9l per 100k's and the patroll does about 10l, the patroll has 118kw and around 350nm the prado has 96 and 340nm but the prado's engine is still old tech so it would be much easyer to get parts for and fix unlike the more high tech nisan motor (wich i hear require alot of spare parts after 100,000k's).

as for touring i'd choose prado.

for how many people?? you and noe more or what?? my old man has a Prado and we did 2 weeks touring with 4 people, draws and roof racks (wont need roof racks will 2 people) and is was great and had more than enough shit with us and still never uncomfortable.
my brother has also used it in the bush (as my recovery car) and it showed no problems doing light to medium tracks.

for tourer id go Prado and some light play
Patrol for harder offroad

here is an idea of a prado tourer

Mate had a new 3.0L Prado on my recent Cape York trip. Did it easily, economically and comfortably. I could not believe how smooth it was compared to my SWB patrol. Had to pull him out of a few bogs but I would suggest you tag-along with someone else for these sort of places anyway.
He did upgrade the suspension and tyres. He had an older 90' series before the new one and it never got bogged. Another guy at work went round Australia in his, had some problems with a loose fuel tank.

Thanks very much known 2, exactly what I was after.

Evan, the above prado is a good idea of what I want, but no lights and roof rack up top. Plus I want diesel and GXL

Grazza, where and how did your mate's Prado get stuck?
And what would have fixed it? (Cause im definitely going by myself)

Winch?
Lockers?
More lift?
Bigger, better tyres?
Less weight?
More power?
Combinations of the above?

Yeah those prados did well in the OBC.

I think a prado would make a good tourer though! I personally would just get the patrol for the extra room but thats me.

Prados are very capable offroad providing they have traction control.
I would think that weight will make a difference to fuel economy and imagine the Prado would win there.

The Prado also has a huge fuel holding capacity straight out of the box, so that must count when touring.

Bigger engine in the Prado may even out the fuel economy question.

Ride is probably better in the Prado and it will be a less tiring vehicle to drive on long hauls.

The Patrol is probably a better tow vehicle (stability) and almsot definitely more rugged off road.

I would suspect that the Patrol has more cargo space, though the Prado also has heaps.

I know it sounds like I am sitting on the fence here, but thought I would offer food for thought rather than join in the Bulls**t Nissan V Toyota crap. After all that is what you asked for

11 to 12 per 100kms on highway or around town, underpowerd, but a after market chip can fix that. mine has just over 230kms on the clock & have flogged the crap out of it from day one & never had a problem with it apart from being underpowered!
