6.5 V8 CHEV DIESEL/5.7 CHEV RAMJET V8
Okay i ave pretty much made up my mind as far as what engines i want to choose from.
I have spent hours searching through the old posts regarding engine upgrades and all associated stuff. I tiook a 6.5chev diesel for a burn the other day and must admit i was impressed... felt very torquey.... by no stretch of the imagination a zippy engine but seemed like it would pull my caravan no worries and be awesome for beach work. The guys was quite pedantic about the fuel usage and kept it all logged in a book... he recorded and average of 14.5l/100kms ordinary driving around town and 19l/100kms while towing his massive 4 tonne boat. And the disco towed it quite well.
This conversion is costly at 20k but from what i ahve gathered that is a fully recon engine with every other bit brand new by brunswick deisel.
The other option appeals to the rev head in me. A company over here has roughly quoted me 20k to get one of those performance " Ramjet" 350 chev v8's installed. I have the bonus that the car is also currently on gas.
I guess my main dilemma is that i need the engine i choose to be able to take me around australia towing my 1.5 tonne van comfortably sitting on 100kph and not changing down gears when i hit hills. But when i take it off i wanna be able to have some fun.
Also it has to be reasonable on fuel no more than 20l per 100kms...
Anyone out there with a bigger engine in a series 1 discvery???
I need more info guys... please, its a lot of money to spend and i dont want to make a mistake..

Spending 20 on a 350 install, then being happy you've already got gas fitted............priceless

Wanted: Car trailer or beaver tail truck, let me know what you got
Its amazing the amount of people saying sell it buy a patrol... I have owned them and would rather any day of the week sit my big arse in my comfortable landrover discovery.
Okay this is the way i look at it... My current 94discovery is worth all of a a bout 5k. They are not worth that much people are scared of owning them. So i sell that and add it to my 20 k budget giving me 25k. So for that i could either buy a fully done up and ready to go TD patrol or landcruiser right?!!? Now this particular car has done approx 200,000kms plus.( As an example)..i dont know the vehicle from a bar of soap... What happens 5000 kms into my trip when this engine that i thought had been looked after blows up and im up for another 10k?? I like the idea of spending the money on the disco because its bloody comfy for a 4wd, most of its alloy so it wont rust, the rest of the car is in pretty good nick and for that massive ammount of money i am getting basically a brand new motor covered under warranty, brand new aircon pump, brand new alternator...brand new everything and i like the associated prices with the chev deisel... most parts are cheap as!!!
Marc
The guy that i drove the v8 chev diesel has not upgraeded any part of his drive line and the engine has been in his car for 2 years.

I agree with you, stick with the Disco, not worth selling given the current prices.
Have you thought about a second-hand/reco'd TD5 engine. They pull like a schoolboy on steroids especially when chipped?
Know a few people with these and they smile all the time.

Nice gq swb ute chop with a huffer for the good times
I wouldnt drive anything else either but being realistic, any conversion you do will give that little extra risk of unreliability. I wouldnt want to tow a large van with a V8 as you wont be getting far between refills and wallet empties. Is the ramjet a carby crate motor ? better off with a VN EFI 5ltr or maybe an isuzu diesel. I really dislike jap 4by's but if i wanted a heavy duty 4wd for towing then a patrol would be my choice.
Saddle up tonto, its the not so loanrangie! . 98 TDI DISCO lightly modded with more to come.
20k sounds pretty steep and a Patrol would have to be an option...However i am with u and i'd rather sit my ass in a landy anyday..
Surely just for road use the fine spline diffs should be up to it?
The gearbox on the other hand i dont believe would last long...
Does the 20k include a new box?
The LT 77 would die just at the sight of a big diesel and wasnt the 380 in the R380 meant for 380nm again wouldnt last long..
And if its an auto get that sucker beefed right up and put a big ass cooler on it and hope for the best.

Why? i've got a 6.2 with LT77 and its done over 100klms faultlesslyDK wrote:

I had the 6.5TD Chev in an 80 Series. Pig of a motor, would never touch one again.
Go a 4BD1T, Cost half as much to do, better on fuel and it is kind of a landy motor.
Another option would be a Cummins 5.9L
If ya want a 4x4 camry go ahead & buy a Patrol or Cruiser.
Rangie with 80s LC diffs, Isuzu 4bd1, Twin ARB lockers, 8000lb Hi mount warn, 315x75x16 Procomp XTerrains
I found it really coarse, it always ran hot, was a bitch to start when cold, eat heaps of fuel.cloughy wrote:Why did you find it a pig??
The motor was 20k old when I got it and it was done by Linquip.
It had the Toyota 4 speed behind it so that may have had a bit to do with it as that box was not suited to it at all.

It is a great motor and I have had no problems with it. I bought the truck with the conversion already done by Linquip, It came with a full instruction manual for the motor andparts list all supplied in a folder with the Linquip sticker on it.
I went on a trip from Sydney to QLD recently and I got ave 11L / 100km fuel economy and when I called into Linquip to get a new acc cable, the serviced it free of charge.
One point if runing it behind an auto, make sure you get the kickdown adjusted otherwise it tends to kick down about 2000rpm, right when you want to use the massive torque.
Off road the thing is FANTASTIC!!!!
I have 37" MTR's / 38" Swampers and I'm still running 4.1's in the diffs, other than a little quick downhill, everywhere else I couldn't be happier with how it goes.
If you opt for a manual, be prepared for only having a 3sp gearbox, first and second are almost useless unless towing.
As far as parts are concerned, I service it myself and have had no probs with getting all the stuff from my local repco.
Hope this helps.

i had a 6.2 in my rangie and went well, reciepts for over 15g inclu rebuilt transfer at brunswick, never had an issue and used it for towing a offroad camper all round w.a and qld, as long driveline is tight u shouldnt have a problem, backlash and wear in drive line is what will break things when the slop gets taken up under full pedal, they are only 120 hp engine although torqey
I guess the hardest choice is to go diesel and also do i go for the 6.5 cHEV diesel or do i go for a chev or holden injected v8 OR do i go for a worked landrover motor??
Its such a hard choice and im running out of time to make my choice.
marc
Wish there was someone over here with a 350 in a disco and another guy with a 4.6 in another so i coulde go for a ride and test em out...LOL

So what do ya do?? I know i would enjoy the 6.5 diesel for towing and beachwork and more than likely for off roading of all types but then it does lack that acceleration i like on the road... then on the other side if i get the diesel i wont hurt it but if i have a reasonable petrol i will beat up on it all the time.
The diesel will cost me 20k but how much will the other cost... I would imagine the 350 would cost me around 10k/12k and i have no real idea what a 4.6 would cost... Although i did speal to one landrover specialist i cant remember their name but they said they could build me a 5litre rover engine but it costs a bit...something like 7k just for the block and then decent heads on top and all the rest??
I dont know

Td5 or power stroke 2.8 will give you 120hp fairly cheaply and heaps of torque to boot.
But your only towing 1.5 tonne van, why not just slide a blower on top of a fresh 3.9 to give a bit more torque and not worry about moding anything else but the computer and a bit of the sound deadening under the bonnet it's a hell of a lot of money with not a lot of justification if it were my dollars.
But if you do go the 6.2 wack an auto behind it as it makes them a lot nicer to drive and surprisingly fuel efficient as your not constantly reving the thing out.
Or you could by a mid to low K s1disco 300 tdi with the lot for 20k and keep your v8 for fun, it will also pull 1.5 tonne with ease and return 12l/100k at the same time at 130km/h I know this as I have just returned from alice to melb pulling my Mums tandum pop top with ensuit etc without a hastle with mine.
They take off slow but once your there your there all the way to 140 and then there's nothing
No trailer 100kmh I average 9 to 10l/100km (depends on where im driving e.g. NT or VIC).
110kmh 10to11l/100km 135kmh(in NT before no more derestriction) averaged 13l/100km.
got 12l@130 with a tail wind on the way back with no stopping for 800km other than to take a leak and then 110kmh in SA was still around the 11 to 12 range.
I get 9 to 10 in melb traffic with my wife driving.
20k I'd consider selling mine and building 2 more..
