Hilux box stuffed???

Gday all

I got a little problam with my 1988 third gen hilux with the 2.8 diseal.
Was drving this arvo up a not very steep hill in 5th gear this arvo at lost all power in this gear, with a huge banging noise coming from inside the gearbox.
1st and reverse still work but with alot of noise, havent tried other gears as i towed it home.

Is my gear box stuffed???

Dose anyone know what gear box came in this model lux and how much a replacement would be?

If I recall corectly it is a G52 Gearbox, best bet would be to compare the cost between repair and replacing the box... and go from there.

1988 sounds like what I know as 2nd gen hilux, the square shape.

Being 5 speed it should still be the G52 that was continued into 3rd gen, rounder shape.


A stab in the dark from me would be up too $500 for a replacement gearbox.


Just realize that you are possibly buying someone elses problem, if you have it rebuilt there should be a warranty included.


*edit* Did not know that 3rd gen went back to 88, didn't notice ya said 3L diesel. It is the G52 box.
