For a tourer I'd go the 95 series Prado. Size and comfort as standard IMHO are better than the 3.0ltr Patrol. Off road they are as good as each other.
Size was my issue (Car wise as well  ) so the Prado fit the bill.
Lifted it 2" and locked it F & R - she runs 33" muddies easy and possibly would fit 34"s as is. Fuel econnomy - City cycle (can turn my chip on/off)
STD
265/75's - 9ltrs
285/75's - 12ltrs

Chipped
265/75's - 11ltrs
285/75's - 13.5ltrs.

The gearing in the Prado appears to be lower than the Patrols (or maybe its my imagination) which is great for LR work. Driving it hard offroad with out the chip active? - sh!t its a diesel and they are not that responsive - chip active and the difference is unbelievable ( power and torque - the flats dissappear).
Most distance out of both tanks (about 168ltrs) was just short of 1270kms - thats nearer 7.5ltrs per 100 - that was on the HT's

Issues with the Prado - CV's, shafts. Have broken 2 in 12 months. 1 off road and one - just Murphy's law. Not sure if i'd run 35"s without doing some other mods but as a tourer i'd stick with 285/75's downwards.
For an offroad vehicle - the Prado with go anywhere a patrol will. Sometimes a lot easier to - but each vehicle has its limits. Would I chose another Prado - yep. For me (family of 4) the Patrol is to big and to cumbersome for the Minster of Finance to throw around off road.

Just another Pwado Drivers 2cents.
