Hi guys im looking at a new 4wd to buy and ive only ever owned patrols but am lookign at a 4.2 diesel 80'series it has 280,000ks on the clock and wanting to know whether i can safely run a aftermarket turbo kit (been looking at the turbo glide kit) on this car with this many ks

would it be alrite and what sort of boost can be run if it had a 3 inch exhaust with 3 inch dump pipe etc? i know nothing bout landcrusiers so ur advice is appreciated

there is a discussion just down the page on this very topic. lots of usefull information.you can easily run a af turbo on the 1hz engines.they do like the 3" exhaust and can run pretty much whatever boost you like(within reason).

free plug for me, my 80 series sahara is up for sale in the next week.
its a import with the diff locks and factory turbo engine,fridge,lift..send me a pm if your keen for some specs and pics.

We put a turbo on my 1HZ after 370,000 km's running 9psi. It's a totally different wagon with it. Money well spent !!

its got a 3" suspension lift and a 2" body lift running 35" claws.

sold it for $16,000 about 3 weeks ago.

Fitted a turbo to my 75 ute with 1hz donk with 240,000 km on it.
Should have done it 200,000 km ago.

First thing to do is a compression check to make sure all pots are in good nick.

I fitted a toyota turbo off an 80 series 1HDT donk that threw a rod thru block. Picked it up from the wreckers complete with turbo, exh manifold, intake crossover, all water and oil lines & air filter lid.
This bolts straight on with a few mods for oil in & out. Cost $900 from wreckers, overhauled turbo myself $210 for kit & got it balanced.
All up cost $2000 with a 3 inch exhaust & dump pipe. The 3 inch exhaust is a must, don't even bother with the 2 & half inch.
Ring around local & interstate wreckers as you may get lucky.

The waste gate is not adjustable and am running 10psi at max boost.
The best money to spend also is on an exhaust temp indicator, I got the jaycar kit $70 with a $35 truck thermocuople from "Engine protection systems" & it is as good as anything else available out there & it has an adjustable temp switch.

Get it dyno'd to adjust injector pump so you don't end up with excessive exhaust temp.
Exhaust temp is the most critical parameter in a turbo diesel donk, all the stories you here about blown engines after getting a turbo fitted are down to long term excessive exhaust temps.

The next best thing to fit is an intercooler, thats my next project.

The 1HZ is a great donk to turbocharge from a cheap diy to a get ripped off drive in drive out job. And as long as you don't abuse it with excessive exhaust gas temp it will last as long as non turbo.

1HZ with a properly setup turbo runs sweet, mine is a Turboglide Garret I bought 2nd hand, knew its history, fitted it myself, dfitted a 3" mandrel exhaust, pryo guage and boost guage, all up just under $2800, currently running 9 psi, been dyno'd, just watch and drive by the exhaust gas temperatures, but be aware of where the temp is being monitored..upstream or downstream of turbo.
