What fits where a 253 red motor was?

Post by SeptemberSquall »

Hi,

just picked up an LN46 Hilux with a tidy 253 red motor conversion.
what fits where a 253 was (ie. interchangable engine mounts, bellhousing pattern, flywheel to crank bolt pattern, etc.)

308, sure, anything else? like a 283/307/350 chev or something? what do ppl use in these cars?

If the 253 motor conversion is good... use it for a bit. It's twice the engine that the lux had to start with :D

Only the 253 or 308 will be a 'bolt in'. Stroke the 253, or do the same to a 308 if you want more torque. 326 from a 308 with offset ground crank and small journal chev SB rods.

I had a 253 forerunner for awhile and it had more than enough go. You probablly start breaking stuff otherwise.

The only problems I had was getting the clutch setup right and the carby, it had a 350 holley on it that ran out of fuel on inclines after I replaced it with a stock 2 barell stromberg it was better but running too rich just of idle and fouled plugs all the time. Was going to go straight gas but I sold it.

The 253 is probably a better motor for the lux than even a 308 as they are a bit more rev happy and forgiving of punishment .
I'd stick with it for a while and see how you go .
253 has a trimatic pattern bell housing so only a trimatic pattern 308 will be a straight interchange engine .
308 turbo pattern, 307 chev 327 chev and 350 chev all use the same bellhousing pattern .

253

why change it?, if it's a good set up , run with it. Somebody's done all the hard work just spend some time fine tuning it . Exhaust, carby, gearing, a 253 will give enough grunt for a hilux. :)

Maybe you could tickle it with a megasquirt (or other) fuel injection system? Might be the easist route if you want a bit more power and no carbie issues on hills.
