Gearing Q's

Post by 83zook »

Im after christovers advice on diff ratio's into a 1 litre.
My question is if i put lj80 4.6 ratios into my 1ltr can i run 31's that read 30.51"?, because this is what im working off:

New tire size
old tire size x current gear ratio = New ratio

30.51
27.10 x 4.1 = 4.614831372549019

And with that being a bit lower than standard my 4 speed is going to be ringing its head off to do 100 Km/h
And will i still have to change the side gear between lj and sierra?, because you told me about the lj50 r&p you would have to change the side gears or put the r&p into the sierra centre, do lj80's have the same size axles in the back as a sierra does?
And i wanted to know have you got standard transfer? because i read somewhere on here that the 1.3 rockhoppers will fit into the 1ltr transfer! is that correct? btw i know you have lj50 4.9's
Sorry i rambled with so much sh*t but i've got lots of Q's and everyone i talk to either dont want to listen or dont know what in the hell im talking about!
Thanks
p.s What do you think of Sumitomo Sarengeti M/T because thats what im planning on putting on because there cheap enough and did pretty good in the 4WD monthly Muddie comparo!

There is some LJ80's with same rear axle size as Sierra, but very rare.
So putting the r&p onto Sierra centre is best way.
Front bolts straight in, so do what I did, try the ratio by fitting front only, and driving front wheel drive for a bit. (with rear tailshaft out)
This will tell you if its ok.
Mine is LJ50 diffs which is 4:9 and I run 31" measured tires. 32's.
Its a little low for highway cruising, but ok round town.

Some gearing kits will fit either 1.0litre or 1.3 cases with 4wd lights.
No gearing kits will fit older 1.0 litre t-cases.
I run an older 1, but mine came out with the newer 1.

Sumitomo Sarengeti M/T seem to work ok, have not seen many in action, but those who have them are happy with value and performance

Mines now fitted with a 1.3 eng and box. The 1.3 box is different gearing to the 1.0 box slightly.

1.0 litre engines work best when they rev a bit so in my opinion 4:6 would suit yours. For road use, mine would be better with 4:6 but I am very happy with it offroad.
But just buy 1 and see if you like it, then if you don't you haven't wasted anything.
