Snorkels

In the everlasting quest to provide both individuality in this homogenous world and to do it on a budget, what does everyone think of home made snorkels.

After visiting the usual obvious places, I finally located a place in Brissie that sells 3" ID 90deg. and 45deg. elbows in attractive black rubber. This combined with some 3" OD exhaust tubing and I'll have a cool looking snorkel. Also, I'm losing the pre-cleaner and in the same operation.

The whole deal will cost about $160, alot better than the $395 I've been quoted and even the 4wd Systems (SA) price of $289+delivery.

Now, wnat are the downsides of this route? Do real snorkels have some water outlet or some such that I have neglected.

As usual, all input greatly appreciated.

go for it !!!

basic principle = if water can get out - water can get in !!!!!

a little bit of rain down the snorkel is OK !!!

helps with engine cooling !!!

Tried second hand ?? Theres been a few forsale lately around the forums.

Look at Birdys exhaust pipe one in Yota mthly looks trick!

Yeah, I like that one, although stainless ruins the economy part of the idea. But it does look very trick.

it is good practice , real snorkel or custom ,
to turn the head around wen doing lotsa mud & bog holes !!!!

motors dont mind a lil bit of water , but wen it comes to mud , DOH !!!

Make your own, it may look average but the money you save is worth it... to put towards things you can't make

On my Hilux i used to have, i took the quarter pannel off turned the pipe around that was running in around there out to the front, cut a hole in the top of the quarter pannel and ran a bit of Pvc pipe spraypainted black up to the top with a bracket on the windscreen, The whole thing cost me about $4.30, then i bought a proper safari head that was $90, but hey it worked, i had the car in water up over the bonnet.

GO FOR IT!!! its not hard.

if ya do it properly some come a real treat
ive seen some that look really shityy
a saw a bloke who used downpipe from his house ran it down to the guard
and use a 45 degree bend to hook it up to the air filter
very very shit
if ya do it properly then go for it

Drafty, where did you pick up that rubber pipe at the joins? as i could really use some, also how much the the Stainless???? stubing cost?

Pipe is actually alluminium, cost $70 for 3 meters, and the elbows are from Coburg truck parts $30 each.

I like that Drafty, looks great. That's the look that I'm after.

I found the elbows at a place called Brisbane Air Cleaner Services at Strathpine (07) 3881 0384 on the northside. $17 for the 90deg. and $25 for the 45deg. 3" exhaust tubing $15 per foot + a bit of welding.

By the way, how come you faced the outlet backwards?

He's prob following "BIRDY'S" setup cause apprarently he achieved more HP with the outet facing backwards? ..........

Aswell as i guess it helps to keep water from enterin?? and no need to keep turnin round the intake wen in comps and enterin water holes at SPEED :twisted:

the straighter the pipe, and the more direct, the more power can be made, especially in a hottie engine. in a stocky, it may make no difference, as it isnt using all the pipes diameter.

this my home made snorkel for my Zuk but same principle. i used 3" pipe that is actually tied into the exo cage. lots of strength and works great as a snorkel. All cost about $30 to make plus the ram head
