reversable body lift bolts

Post by Puk »

Sorry to ask another body lift question, but i bought a reversable 2 inch lift kit, and seeing the ute has more captive studs than your standard sierra, i need to drill out the hole in the middle of 2 of the blocks wider, and get two more of those bolts with the thread taken off the outside, a hole drilled down the middle and tapped to handle the body studs.

Does anyone know what i mean and who still makes them? I know gutless used to, but i see that he is now pretty busy and may not have time to any more.

BODY LIFT

Post by jord »

I bought a large bolt for $2, cut the end off then drilled and tapped it. you really need a lathe though. I dont think it would cost much for an engineering place to make you a couple? Just a suggestion, good luck mate.

If you know someone who has access to a lathe this shouldn't be too much of a hassel but to get an engineering shop to do will cost a bit especially as you only want two. Set up time is where the cost will be, might be better to organise to get a heap done then sell them yourself. If you can find someone to setup a CNC program for it the cost per unit should come down considerably.

Thanks,
I think i will just take an existing one to the local engineering place in my little town here and get them to make 2 up for me.

The problem and the need for a reversable system is the fixed studs in the centre of the vehicle. Most body lifts the blocks themselves are threaded and turn onto the studs but due to the length of the stud this would not leave enough room ie threads for a bolt to go up into the block. Therefore to use a 2" body lift block which has an internal thread to fixed studs must be cut down. Thus not leaving enough stud to return the vehicle to original condition. The use of the custom bolts like the ones Peter was making allows the blocks to be drilled out to 16mm and the bolt to come up from under the chassis mount onto the body stud.

alright, latest problem,
The blokes here can't figure out what thread the captive studs are on the sierra. they need to know so they can tap the bolts.
does anyone know what it is? Apparently it isn't a usual thread, the Japanese manufacturers do things a little differently apparently.

If i could find that out i could get them made up real quick.

10 x 1.25 i think or 12x1.25, most bolts on a sierra are 1.25 pitch.

search will yeild more results

I think it is a M10x1.25 which is a 'fine' thread. If you take one of the nuts off your mounts he should be able to identify the thread with that.

I tried that. They didn't have the right tap in store so it didn't help. I think most people use 1.5 pitched bolts. I don't know where i will find 1.25 tap.

cant you find the bolt that fits it, then you will know what tap you need.

I would say if the engineering workshop didn't have the tap and couldn't identify it, I wouldn't be getting them to do my work.

Go old school and find the crustiest old fitter, one man shop. These guys tell you the thread from 20 foot (imperial on purpose) without even dropping the bi-focals off their sparically covered grey haired head. Most will even tell you before you get it out of your pocket. Old buggers get me every time.

the engineering place was a big new agricultural machinery shop. I should have known to go and ask the little backyard operator, which i promptly did and got the right tap straight off. It was the 10x1.25, and he had it because he said it was the usual tap for exhaust mounts.

Anyway, took it back to the firt place, and to get two bolts made up and two steel body blocks drilled to accept them cost about $33 including 30 mins labour charge so on the whole i don't have a clue how much it would cost me to make up each bolt.

I don't think i can be any less helpful than this, try as i might.

the lift is under the Maruti now, and it does look the part.

Puk

P.S. Now i just need to paint it, put an engine in it, wire the 1.3 up to the 1L loom, put the seats in, and the UHF, CD player, Steering wheel, put the tray back on, make up a tail-light assembly, put the roo-bar back on, replace the springs with lifted ones.............................

Doesn't sound like much work at all, does it?

That price was pretty good considering the set up time etc. etc.

get one throuh derek at Suzisport.
From all accounts they are quite good quality.
the number is on a current thread floating around here at the moment.
If you don't get one from him, don't ask him any questions about them, even if you are a regular customer. (He tends to become a little frosty) :bad-words:
