quarter panel chop, lights?

Post by 4WD WOG »

hey guys,

looking at cutting the quarters on my gq lwb, it has factory lights in the rear bar but i need to get the other ones with the brake, reverse and indicator in 1. is it a hard job to rewire? or do the bulbs just go straight in the the new lights?

Need to bring the brake/tail and indicator up from the bumper wiring harness. It does not exist in the quarter panel.

If you've got the new bar with the lights in it it'll probably be illegal to change to the old 3 way lights... better off to try and fit the existing ones in your new rear bumper.

I don't see why this would be the case :? I got tail light assembly from '89 mdl and rewired tail/brake light into it. All the lights are there, i don't think anyone would even know it's not original.
BTW, yes the clip in thingos are the same on pre 92 tail light assembly's. Reverse and indicator's already there it's just a case of extending wiring for tail/brake light.

BM is correct..it would not be 1992 or 93 ??ADR compliant as the tail lights in the bumpers were part of the ADR...basically you had to be able to see the tail lights at most angles. The spare wheel blocked this view.

BUT how this would be picked up on the road...hardly. If you require a RWC...most likely.

It wouldn't get picked up on a GQ. It would be harder to get away with it with a GU as people know every model had the lights in the bumper.

ADR's also state that your headlights cannot be more than 1.2m from the ground and I have never had mine checked, even by the Engineer or when I had my Blue slip done. Its not actually over, but its close enough to check. Most Police and Rego inspections aren't that pedantic.

or dont know.

just put the earlyer tail lights in. modified/nonstandard tail lights would raise more eyebrows than a 94 model with 90 model lights in it

I wouldnt be too concerned about it, but just be aware it would be illegal. Not that this seems to matter when your spare wheel carrier blocks visibility of your indicator anyway :P

They pre91 style tail lights can be brought from ebay for abit over $100. Very easy to wire up. I havent cut the cnrs so I still have lights in the bumper. But I just used trailer wire to piggy back into the loom on the bumper.

As for them being illegal if they are fitted and the bumper lights are removed. Well the lights themselves aint illegal. But not having any lights in the bumper would be. As it says they should be there for that year by the ADR's. As RN said, there is a certain angle where the lights must be visible. Later mdl GQ's dont pass that test with std wheels/tyres.
Would it be picked up I dont think so.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....
