Custom Dashes or modifications

G'day All,

I recently posted this in the Toyota forum but have had no responses

Thought I'd try my luck in the general section


I recently purchased an 86 Hilux Dual Cab.

The inside is showing it's 20yrs of age and is my Christmas hols project.

I'm going to be stripping out the entire interior and redoing the lot.

I'm wondering if anyone has done any dash work to their Toyotas - particularly Lux's in this instance.

Are there any complete custom jobs out there or perhaps has anyone grabbed dash bits from other vehicles and fitted them to a lux?

I've had a gander at the thread a little while back on interiors...are there anymore ideas out there or completed projects?

Very interested to hear/see what people reckon.

Just make sure its padded and safeish for head bumps. Thats what an engineer I spoke to said about a diy dash.

there are people who can restore the plastic part of a dash etc where they crack, not sure of anyone in particular, but search the net or look in custome car mags for ads, maybe car trader mags, carpet is easily and cheaply available in complete moulded sections in just about anu colour, the rest like door trims etc get material and do it yourself, plenty of aftermarket stuf like door handles are availabel as well

?? when I took my POS to an engineer he said the dash had to be padded before he would pass the other stuff. Also depends on the year of the car something about adr's. probably more of a roadworthy thing than an engineering concern.

And also ILLEGAL - see comments above about padding.

Luke - AFAIK there are no mod codes for dashes (but check with an engineer for sure) - just ADRs pertaining to the specific features - i.e. must have accurate speedo, must have working demister, etc, and must be padded and have no sharp edges/corners.

dash and steering wheel must retain original/equivelant padding as supplied buy manufacture. read into that how you will. example being a gq patrol has a soft steering wheel as aposed to a wood grain one. so an after market wood grain wheel would be "unroadworth" to the letter of the law. how ever its only illegal if you get caught. so long as it retains original caractoistics youl be right.

why not carpet the dash or get it repaired and painted to the color of your choice, checker plate, carbonfiber or flat alloy guage surrounds, aftermarket guages, aftermarket seats, custom door trims, custom console, mate the sky is the limit what do you want? and how much do you want to spend. there are many things that you can do your self with minimal tools, its amazing what you can do with a jig saw, MDF and speaker carpet or a sheet of alloy. flames coming off the speaker in checker plate did it for a mate of mine. a tin of VHT trim paint works well on vinal. some times a simple color change is all you need from brown to grey

fibre glass, ply wood, body filler, thin sheet foam ( 6--10mm ) and vinyl or fabric. that will make you just about any thing you want and you will get the satisfaction of making it your self. just hack into wat you have and go with the flow

OK, so short of making a whole dash myself from scratch, I went and had a gander at the wreckers today.

I liked the look of the dash in a jeep grand cherokee and was wondering if anyone has done a dash swap from one vehicle to another of a different make before?
