Post by bubs »

A bloke at work wants to put 35s on his mq short, pretty sure it is diesel and wants to keep / improve his low range gearing

He realy wants to do something along the lines of t-case gears but apprently you can't buy any.

What advice can i give him, we have already thought of adapting twin hilux transfers into the shorty  :finger:

low gearing wasn't that bad with the 35's, 33's didn't even notice it but up to the 35's you will be surprised... it's not that bad

the numbers stamped on the front top edge of the G/box are a code as to what box it is ( right up near where the bellhousing bolts up), other than that pull the sparkplugs out and with a mate rotate the motor in 1st gear and count the revs the driveshaft turns ( put a mark on the shaft)... its the simplist way and gives a fairly accurate reading. or PM me the numbers and I'll check it against the book.

BTW i thought that the MK's only came in an SD33T but are you saying they still retained the SD33 with the 5spd box?

I dont know about the MK series motor/box combinations but the MQ series 1980 to 1987 ran a couple of different combinations in gearbox's and transfers to both the SD33 and SD33T aswell as different suspension setups/ interiors/seating capacities etc, multiply that by the LWB & SWB and petrol/diesel models and you can see where the confusion starts to set in !
Of my 3 MQ's alone there are 3 totally different combinations, ChevyMQ has 3 aswell and his are also different aswell, even the diff ratios are different in 2 of the 6 MQ's here and they are all SWB vehicles !!!
One I cant figure is the seating capacities of my 3... one compliance plate says 3 , next says 4 and the last says 5 !!!! go figure that one !
As for the 3 spd ???? the bible doesnt have any ratios listed but I will check out a bloke I know who has a full set of microfish on patrols and get back to you.
