Dangerous problem with a GQ
well this is the 3rd time all the wheel nuts on the left hand front wheel have come undone. they have been so loose that they are about to fall off.
first time the wheel came of at 80k an hour along a winding road. lucky the car did not go over the edge.
then today at 60kph the wheel was binding i stoped and what did i find loose wheel nuts.
both times ive been round a few corners but the second time was low speed read 60kph or under
the studs and nuts have been replaced. its the only wheel, lefthand side rear lossen a little when this happens but need a wheel brace to discover this.
short of checking them every 2 weeks what can i do to stop this happening becuase it coudl potentially kill myself or someone else at speed.
i dont run another set of wheels im at a loss as to what is causeing this.

maybe the cones where the wheel nuts sit in on the rims are worn out causing them to come loose? try swapping your rims left to right and see it the problem occers on the same side still ? i cant realy think of anything else it could be if you have replaced studs and nuts.

Might be a bugger if you get a flat, but could you loctite them on? Maybe with just the temporary loctite not the permanent.
Just talking out of my hat, as I don't know, but if the centre of the wheel isn't flush (warped or the like) then could doing up the nuts on one side be putting opposing pressure on the others, which as they loosen would then help work the others loose?
Beats me. Sorry I can't be much more help. But I'd consider loctite and a flamin hefty wheelbrace or extension tube on your wheelbrace so that you can undo them if you have a flat.

im useing a wheel brace to get em on and off.
i have thought about the locktite idea though

have a quick visual, are they out of round? if so thats the culprit garunteed.maybe the cones where the wheel nuts sit in on the rims are worn out causing them to come loose?
it has been mentioned here before somewhere but overtightening can cause issues as the nuts are made to "bind" the rim at a certain pressure, any (alot)more than this and over time it will flatten and not become tight no matter what.

its a common thing on most 4wd's
especially gq's with bigger tyres................. its to do with theway to tyre rotates and it being the same wayas theythread on the wheel nut unwinds
same reason alot of trucks run anticlockwise thread on the passenger side
best bet is check them regularily especially when 4wding

yep i would second that, been there with a landy (god help me) many years ago and a mq. The holes will be worn or elongated. Mayne the nut is bottoming out first and not on the rim. If it's the only rim doing it, logically it has to be isolated to the one wheel, mostly. if it is the second time on the front the rim is already damaged i would say (flogged out holes) The remainder rims are most likely worn too as the rear one was loose, but not as bad.shakes wrote:look at the hole in the rim where the stud's go through and if its an oval shape rather than round, basically not round.
a workshop may have overtightened em with a rattle gun at one stage or another

Are the rims OEM? Do the rims have small 'lumps' on them on the back of the rim, so the rim does not sit flush - the nuts will never tighten properly?
are the holes ovaled as previously asked?
What nuts are you using - are the caped nuts (you cant see thru), or are they ones that do up so you can see stud still
- if they are capped, try normal ones the studs may have stretched over the years, and the nut is not pinchign the rim correctly
- take it somewhere and get it checked properly before you kill someone.

Another thort that you could try is tighten each opposite nut in sequence around the wheel.......abit more than finger tight the first time around .....and then to finish tightness the second time around. I did this on my semi years ago (spider wheels)...and it helped to keep them properly tensioned and running true....so do it on everything now and to date have had no probs. Another thing to do is to lubricate the threads ONLY with a lite oil....BUT NOT the bevel edge of the nut or rim and this will give you better feel as you do em up.

Sounds to me too like the stud holes in the rims are worn and not allowing the nut to tighten the rim enough to the hub.
Did you get new nuts with the studs? If not you should of got some.
When you tighten the the nuts do the final tightening in sequence with a torque wrench so you know every nut has the same amount of clamping pressure on the rim.
This is more important than you think.
Make sure its done that way when your new rims and tyres are put on and make sure the nuts are the right ones for your rims and studs.
