Hi People
I got a 92 80 series 1hdt cruiser and have noticed a larger than usual amount of smoke coming out of my exhaust. at night time it appears to be of a blueish tinge. I took the pipe that runs from the turbo into the intake manifold off and it appeared to be very clean with only a hint of oil on the rubber part that joins this pipe to the turbo. there appeared to be no oil pooling in the intake manifold. I then pulled of the pipe that connects the air filter box (I have no snorkel) to the turbo. there was oil in this hose that seems to be coming from the pipe that ajoins to the top of the tappet cover. whilst not an excessive amount, im starting to get a bit worried. I service the car every 5-6000km's and it doesnt really get trashed that often. I noticed that when i serviced it yesterday it had used maybe 200ml of oil. Which is pretty good for a old shit tin, but its the first time its used any oil at all. Sounds to me like it is blow-bye. Anyones suggestions. thoughts on this?
when is too much smoke....... REALLY too much smoke??
its done 220,000km's i've owned it since 190,000 odd. no engine work. I replaced the air filter 6 weeks ago.
thanks in Advance
Nik

When she starts using 1lt+ every 1000 km then its time for a re-build .
The problem with the early 1hdt's wasn't blow-by it was big and bearings , heaps were replaced under warranty , long after warranty period .
Gday
Toyota had a recall on that model to close up the oil flutes that seperate the mist from that tube, next time u r doing tappets, do this.
You can also gauge whats going on by taking off the 710 cap (oil for a sheela) and looking at how much is coming out...mine is very bad and i wish 1 litre per 1000 is all she uses

do you mean have the car idle without the oil cap on?dow50r wrote:Gday

do these engines have a pcv valve in the pipe from tappet cover to just after the airbox? could that be rooted?
thanks i'll see what happens when the oil cap is off
Heya
Too much smoke is when you follow our 91 80 series (1hdt, she blows a shite load of smoke) I bet every person that follows it, makes a comment about the smoke!!! dunno what to do about it though!

These motors rely on the vacuum infront of the turbo plus the pressure in the motor to vent through the hose from the tappet cover to inlet...problem is, when things get bad, the flow delivers some oil aswell.
Yes i meant take off the cap whilst idling.....with mine, if you dont hold it firm, it will blow out of your hand, one of my bores is scored, and will be recod soon. The big question is...what has changed??? Did you change oil brand or viscosity, or did u overheat it some time lately?? Is the air filter thesame, is it clean???
If there was oil in the inlet side of turbo, but not in outlet, that points to blowby more than turbo seals, if it were after and not b4, it would be seals....it could be that you have got some fuel from the paint thinners or degreaser tank....did u fill up at the usual place????
