Viscous Coupling on engine fans.

When the engine is at full operating temperature, should the fan be easy to turn by hand, or hard to turn by hand (with the engine off obviously :lol: )

Depends on temperature, as it gets hotter the fan gets harder to turn. Normal temp just sitting there from my experience it should be stiff to turn (hard to explain in words without being able to demonstrate). I rebuilt mine as it had completely run out of oil, now it works spot on.

Nothing 2 bolts in the right place wont fix. Mine is almost impossible to turn by hand now. And works heaps better.

i hate the noise they make... i think il be replacing mine with thermos.

at operating temp the fan should spin free most of the time........hence easy to turn...

Only become hard to turn when the temp has reached a certain level and the viscous oil engages the fan. You should be able to hear the fan kick in when it does turn on. The same sound you should get when you first start till the oil warms a little and fan start to spin freely.

You can buy the viscous oil from Toyota and assuming your viscous coupler is the bolt together job you can unbolt the halves and add the oil in. Two bottles is a little more than orginal and fan should kick in earlier.....

Cost is about $25 for two bottles or at least it was when I bought it a while ago......

Does it make a difference that mine's a Nissan not a Toyota?
It had just very slight resistance after a normal length drive with the engine at about 40% of gauge (where it usually sits)
