doesnt matter if its engineered pefectly to sit on a 12" lift or 6" lift....you can have the mod plates and such but it will still be illegal to QLD transport

Before you ask......I am running a 5" lift and 35's, hence the reason I rarely drive my 4wd. It will be getting used more often soon by my fiance so I will be getting 33's and most likely dropping the height a bit as well

im going two get it regod in vic mate so can drive it whith

that wont mean squat...you will still be defected as it is an illegal vehicle on QLD roads..it is just easier to go for a 4 inch lift and 33s..doesnt look as obvious and do other little things like flares over the tyres so they dont stick out, mudflaps on the rear of the vehicle and other obvious things that they can pick on you for...but as stated if you have an accident you are still up sh!t creek

It isnt possible... hence people play the lottery and get busted like the bloke above.


2+2 and 32"s still needs engineers approval and is about max legal. 33" is pretty much illegal on almost anything since it's more than 15mm over stock sizes like 265/70/16 and 7.50R16.

33"s they seem to let go... anything more they can and do grab. QLD is the only state who *WANTS* NCOP in adn guess what... they havent done it.

It will still be illegal to drive on Qld roads reguardless of where it is regod, you must adhere to which state's rules you are in. So you NSW boys who like to visit other states just be careful

Also basically the same rules are being brought in across the country. Its just that the other states have better things to enforce at the moment.
As ADR's a country thing. not a state thing. QLD TPT or DOT. Just going by ADR's.

If I could just add one point on the advice offered here. As someone who has been down this road recently with QDOT it should be clarified for anyone reading this thread in the future that they get correct info from it to save the trouble in front of the inspectors. General advice is that 2" is fine however the reality is that the QDOT requirements allow a vehicle to be raised by no more than 1/3 the factory bump stop height measurement. I would presume this measurement varies from model to model and as this info is not readily available from the manufacturers it becomes difficult to determine what you are allowed to raise your vehicle by. Even more so if you are intending to do it to a second hand vehicle that is not current showroom model etc. An example in my case is that I was able to go to the local dealer and measure one on the showroom floor, only to find the bump stop height was around 100mm ! ! ! This means the legal raise on these is 33mm (not even 2"). Something to keep in mind when presuming what lift would be considered legal.

Same point on 33s that has already been clarified is that only 15mm above standard placarded tyre size for the vehicle is permitted. Usually 33s don't cut it and don't accept that they all turn a blind eye as it is only just over 'cause the dude I got picked it like a dirty nose and sent me away with a to do list that included shopping for smaller tyres....

So if ive got a car registed & engineerd in NSW your saying that i cant visit QLD in this car?

Doesnt sound right to me..... if i was moving to QLD i could understand, yes i would need to have my car comply with QLD laws (not that i ever would, QLD dot laws suck)

bah i drove my patrol with 6 inch lift n 35's round with nsw plates 4 a while b4 i changed it over. got ignored by the transport boys too.

im tempted to lower it now that its regod here tho as i think ill get done eventually

Otherwise, for instance, NT registered cars could ignore highway speed limits in all other states....

While ADR's are national, the approval for modifications for any vehicle outside of initial manufacture is a state transport department responsibility.

we have a comp up here held by "tough tracks 4x4 club"
with 4" lift and 33s the maximum allowable lift and no aftermarket lockers.
you would be surprised how competitive and 80/gq is.

so what if iv got 350 chev in a hilux regod in qld all apreved by the dot and drive it in nsw so i cant drive it two the summer

I never claimed to be telling him not to drive around on his current lift, I just said he could get reamed for it...I dont see how that makes me a hypocrite. If I had said you must not, ever never never ever drive around with it like such.....then said this is what I do, then I would have been a hypocrite :? Hence the reason I said what mine was driving around on

are you sure about this?? if it complys with the state its regoed in then it should be fine :?
i understand how you say it needs to comply with the state its driven in and it does make sense in a way, but something just doesnt sound right there or fair.
like with licences, i have a nsw licence and get done for speeding in qld, yeh i get a fine but no i dont loose any points.... what right does qld have to take points from a nsw licence??
thats what makes me wonder about the modification/rego issue :?

No... I didnt say that. Because a 350 chev engined lux may be approvable in NSW.


The worst case scenario occurs where there is something that is clearly defined as banned in one state (and of course actively policed as well). In this case running around on 37's and an SPOA would be clearly in breach of QLD laws and as such you'd expect a very expensive trip.



While the states have a reciprocal arrangement on acknowledging each others registration and licencing, the registration side of it is only as far as accepting that the vehicle if it is NOT modified. The grounds for this are that if the vehicle is unmodified then it meets ADRS which are complied to by all states.

That reciprocal agreement DOES NOT guarantee that your engineering modifications which take the vehicle away from ADR compliance will be accepted.


If you dont believe this... see what happens sometimes outside motorcycle rallies eg Broadford, Summernats, Winternats etc. Even with engineering certification you can still have your car done over, although they cannot legally deregister a car from another state (registration is the other state's responsibility) they can legally take action to prevent you from driving it on QLD roads.




By the way, most states only give you 7 days to reregister your car and change your licence after moving. Failure to do so has hefty penalties, including all the usual stuff for unlicenced driving of an unregistered vehicle.

While this varies in every state, are you fancying a 5 year driving ban, $5000 or more in fines, no insurance for 10 years (and far worse than that in the event of a fatal accident and maybe another $10,000 in court costs) just to have those big tyres now are you?

You may get away with it on NSW Plates and a NSW licence on the Gold Coast, but you wont day after day in Brissy on a vic licence.


Interstate rego is no immunity. I personally have played these sorts of rego and licencing games before and had to go through all these hurdles, although I've never had the "unlicenced driver" or the "unregistered vehicle" thing used on me I HAVE been threatened with both - including threats to the tune of "Your licence will be cancelled in 24 hours..... you'd better be in our office tomorrow morning at 9am". I've also had to remove lift, score stock wheels etc.

It does happen..... so dont think that the world will shape itself to meet your desires. More likely you'll just get wenzeled.

Probably not... dont get me wrong, there's plenty of illegally lifted 4wds up here on the road. But it's your risk and you need to be aware of it.


A GU on 35"s doesnt look that bad, so long as the lift kit in it's not excessive (eg no 6" and 7" lift kits or worse yet 7" spring 4" body like soem people seem to HAVE to do).

I thought GU's came out with bigger tyres, but according to the nissan website the 7.50R16 is still the biggest rubber they come out with. 235/80/16, 265/70/16, 265/75/16 (utes only) and 275/65/17 are all smaller.


Also make sure all other things are done to make it look appropriate - mudflaps, flares etc. Every little bit helps.

Even so, remember it's your risk and your choice.


I would question how much you really need 35"s to do a cape trip considering you've got at least 2700km each way before you even hit the gravel anyway. Even living in Brissy, the thought of taking a train to Cairns is appealing and probably cheaper than fuel. There's more than enough distance driving anyway and you can get nice and pissed on the train... remember much of the cape is dry zones anyway....
