Rebuild or replace?

Post by ferrit »

Got a 1992 2.8L Diesel hilux dual cab- shes just done 315,000kms, and is feeling fairly tired.

So here is the dilema.

Do i rebuild and turbo the 2.8D, or replace it with a 3.0D (and turboing it) or 3.0TD from a later model hilux (or prado for the TD)?

The benifits of rebuilding and turboing my 2.8d is i get to keep the fantastic off idle torque that the 2.8D has, but fix the slowness of it on hills with a turbo (and maybe intercooler)

theres also less pissfarting around with engine numbers, engineers, mounts, that kind of crap.

The downside is that i'll still get have a 2.8L motor under the bonnet that isnt that efficient, and isnt that powerful.

The benifits of fitting a later model motor is theyre a better motor than the 2.8D (even the 5L had balance shafts!) and the 3.0TD motor from a prado has more power and torque than i'd ever get out of a 2.8 with all the fruit.

The big downside is that a 1KZ-TE is at least $5000 2nd hand, and id have to fit an R151F gearbox as well as the G52 wont cope with the intercooled 3.0TD's torque.

I'd also need to move engine mounts, install a puta, convert the FBW throttle to cable (pre 2000 TD hilux throttle body) and a heap of other work.

If i put aside $4000 to fully overhaul the 2.8D, then another $2500 for the turbo, and another $1000 to intercool it properly, then thats nearly $7500...

What price is a 1KZ-TE?

And before anyone suggests it- theres not a hope in hell i'll give up my diesel for a poxy 1UZ- i HATE petrol 4wds, and will never own one!

I'd say 7.5k is fairly optimistic for a full rebuild, turbo and intercooler.
Realistically if you're going to do a FULL rebuild then the engine itself is easily a 4k job if your talking pistons, rings, liners/bores, crank grind, reco head, cam etc... Then your injectors are 300 bucks, pump 1500 bucks, radiator at least cleaned 100 bucks, set of hoses and thermostat 100 bucks. there's another 2k
You'd be sort of wasting your time to spend 4k on an engine and not do the ancillaries, especially if you're going to turbo it.
In my opinion either do yours properly or bang an import low k's 3.0l in it.

whats wrong with the 3L now? those motors last forever if they have been serviced. at 300 000km its probably time to get the injectors done and the pump tuned, and it will be back running as good as new. we have a 2wd hilux with 440 000km and its never been touched and still pulls ok for a 2.8.

if you do want to go down the turbo path id look at the factory 3liter turbo moter as they are a motor designed for a turbo and should last better. but then doing that you would have to upgrade your gearbox as i doubt the one you have now will be able to handle the power.

cheers

Have you considered picking up a 2nd hand 2.8, bolting on turbo and having a boost compensator on the pump?

They came out up til 97 so you might find one with low kms cheap. The 2.8 is a good simple reliable motor it is no power house but with a turbo and work done on the pump they go fairly well.

If you dont want to spend big bucks this is a good option, if you have a bottomless bank account i would recomend the new common rail hilux 3 litre....they haul !!!!
