MK-MQ patrol seatbelts - 1983 and brake question

Post by dromana7411 »

i have a 1983 mk and i need to get new seatbelts for a roadworthy, tried repco and they only had them for 85 - 96 which are a diffrent shape..

does anyone know who sells new ones? does nissan? or somebody in vic (morningtion peninsula region) who redoes them?

for the brakes... i was driving along the westernport highway about to come to the thompsons rd roundabout when i braked i had a wheel lock up, then my foot hit the floor. now my brakes have gone spongey...

had a look at the wheel cycliders, they could do with replacing...

there also looked to be some fluid kind of next to and under the master cylinder, (looked as it had squirted) but i felt it and couldnt feel anything leaking...

If you have to replace the whole seatbelt and clasp as a set. It'll be cheaper and easier to buy whats available at repco or autobarn than getting nissan ones.

If you are talking about where the spool is on the lower part of the pilar for the front belts they dont face into the pilar they face towards the centre of the vehicle.

what part of the seat belt do you actually need, I have a few spares here, so i may be able to help you.

a master cyl inder arent that dear, just put a new one on if you suspect it is failing or on the way out. last one i bought was $70ish. Brake arent really something you can bodgey up with good results.

Cheers

after the strap part of the seatbelts, mine are frayed... (no cant just burn them and cover it up, been done before)

as for brakes, i have a parts car which has a diffrent master cylinder which looks newer, so i might swap them... about to go check the front brakes now.

MQ and later MK should be pretty much the same.....maybe the seat belts look different when mounted but have to have a very similar mount point. I can't see that nissan would have changed the basic design of the cab between models.....

Master cyslinder wise the later MK's had the same master cylinder as the GQ's.......I changed mine on the old MK and had to return the one the wrecker gave me and get one off a GQ......If the other one is different change the whole lot over and be done with it.

Doesn't your parts car have belts????

well i have an 83 MK and a 83 MQ for a parts car...

they both have the same sort of seat blet. the only replacement one i could find is from 85-96 which mounts on the outside of the pillar... mine mount to the inside...

as for master cylinders i still dont know what the problem is, and will work it out 2morrow, because i have nothing to do because my boss cracked the shits and fired me...

well i worked out the brake problem... (after taking the back apart and cleaning ect thinkign teh problem was there)

after a quick check of the front after taking the wheel off to swap back to my daily driver tires i found a nicely chewed disk and no pads...

so i'll swap to my other set of disks, and get some new pads.

still chasing seatbelts tho...

and its illegal to replace the strap, so many places have told me.

repco wanted $99 for the wrong ones (same as all the other places)... trade was about $70...

What do you mean by the wrong ones... if they fit and they're new they are the right ones even if they're not identical.

You will have to replace the floor stalk too.

Getting original seatbelts in roadworthy condition on any 25 year old car is next to impossible. You just have to get the nearest replacement you can find.

Buy some seatbelts from a VT to VX commodore, they mount inside the pillar and use the same threaded bolt (the thread (nut) is part of the belt.

mate go to the wreckers buy a set of gq belts and swap just the strap over to yours. Make sure you clamp the drum when its un wound other wise it will be usless when it unwinds. and dont let the belt roll right up or you wont be able to undo it.

I just checked my neighbours GQ and the seatbelts are on pillar type ones same as my 82 MQ diesel wagon (check pic) . They look very similar, except it has a different plastic cover. Bolts on the same way and has the locating "prong" too. I didnt measure the spacing of the prong but if its different can drill another hole for it.

Anyone got any reason why this wont work?

cheers

that one in the pic is diffrent to mine.... mine mount inside the pillar (i'll get pics 2night when i get the camera back from mum)

i ended up using the ones oput of my parts car, there fairly good, but one has a fray in the middle at the bottom which is covered by the a plastic sleve thing, so hopefully they dont pick up on it.

just gotta fix my exhaust, then sent it off for a roadie.. then the major list will probably come.
