A couple of questions for the Yota buffs
What year model transfer case will I need to run transfer gears in Apparently I can't run them in mine (Feb 74)
Will the newer transfer mate up to my older 4 speed gearbox
Will I still be able to use my PTO on the newer t-case
What sort of $$$ would be a reasonable amount to pay
Anyone got a t-case they want to offload

hi
mate u will need a late 47 -60 or early75 series box and tranny,on the early 4speeds there is no crossmember under the box.with the larger transfer its to much weight for the bellhousing mounts ,the low gears u require will fit in the ones above , pin size will be 34 or 38 , 38would be the one to go for its stronger and not as hard on the idler bearings , i'v just done 1 in my shorty witha 88modle hj75 5speed and trans . hope this helps , on price box an tranny paid $750
you can pick up a gearbox and transfer from a wrecker for under a grand if you haggle :)
pick and payless (blacktown) have an early 60 series they are holding, give them a call and see what they want for the gearbox and transfer. it will be a 4 speed.
also for your PTO you will need a later type PTO box to go on the transfer, for some reason toyota changed it with the newer split transfer. also some 60 series (later G pack for sure, not sure of others) DID NOT have the PTO gear in the transfer case - just a spacer on the shaft.

hi buddy , u have to fit like a 60 series crossmember under the gearbox to support the weight of the box an trannie , miner cuting involved and some welding to the chassie for the mounts , crossmember comes in three peices .fit the box an trannie first than u will see where the crossmember will fit , very easy need a didge camera

I have a fairly beef cross member atm - not sure if this can be used It looks similar to the Snake racing low profile cross members. I will put some pics up in the next couple of days (rig is getting rewired atm )
Do you know if this gbox and t-case setup is physically longer than a 40 series setup ? Thinking of rear shaft etc

The more I think about it - I would rather gearing than the PTO. If I can't use it, it goes in the For Sale section to fund an electric winch

The box i've got is out of an '82 HJ60. It was rebuilt a few years back (maybe 3), but the car was taken off the road shortly after. I could also throw it a crossmember for it.
Don't forget that these 60 series boxes don't have the transfer handbrake setup. Actually come to think about it I also have a geabox and (split) tranfer from a HJ47 troopy that did come with the handbrake on the back and a crossmember to suit a 40 series.

Now you've done it. Now I have to figure out which one will suit better. It was easier when there was only one choice
So, both would come with a cross member ?
What year is the HJ47 g-box and t-case ? Ever recoed ?
Where are you ? Can I check them out ?
Same $$$ for the HJ47 setup ?

there are 2.29:1 gears for the split case, too - from diesel (and possibly petrol, not sure) bunderas. I have 2 sets, one on the bundy, one is in a spare transfer currently bolted to a R150F gearbox from a jap import 1990 LJ78 (prado/bundera LWB)
the late style PTO box is not too hard to find for under $200, just keep an eye on the trading post and pounce when one comes up.

Thanks for looking, but I have my gearing problem sorted now Marks Gearmaster gears are going in as we speak
Plus now I still have the option of doing the diffs later if I feel the need to go loooower
That ad has been in the Trading Post for a few weeks now. Got a bit excited when I saw it - until I saw the $$$ The Marks gears are working out heaps cheaper and are more practical

Yeah it would be roughly about the same ratio for offroad use, but a hassle to drive on road. My rig isn't quite the trailer queen yet
I might go 4.88s later if I need to. At least I have some options
