HELP MY DAD

Post by offroader-rama »

hi guys.
I've talked my dad into putting more boost into his turbo'd intercooled pajero wagon, about 85 import thing, he wanted more power for over taking etc... he is not a lead foot, to busy trying to save fuel.so it would be spasmatic power needed not constant.
I suggested maybe 12psi would be safe we are going to get a boost gage and something like a manual turbo smart boost controller, and take it up a bit at a time but what would be safe psi, with out having to put more fuel in it and would a blow off valve be justifide prefer not he would be inbarrest with the niose. ;)
and thinking of removing muffler to help flow i dont think he would go for a bigger exhaust to tight fisted with the dosh :?
any suggestions would be great

thanks in advance

what motor? 4d56? or the smaller 2.3?
is it intercooled?
cant do BOV as its diesel

mine is the 4d56 intercooled version and it runs 10-12 psi standard.
i went up to 18psi or so before the factory vent pipe thing cut in and i didnt notice any diff.
theres no real point in putting much more, at the end of the day its still a diesel.. if u want some stick then drop a v6 in it

You can install a BOV on a diesel, it's just a little trickier, and doesn't achieve much.

Diesels are, by design, an excess air engine. Adding MORE air (more boost) won't help unless you add more fuel to go with it.

As j-top found, 12 psi is about normal - if your father's engine is running below this, there may be some noticeable improvement in building it back up. An aftermarket boost controller may not be required - if it's currently running low, you need to work out why.

Install the boost gauge, get that working, then take it to a diesel specialist for an assessment, and some options.

A diesel doesn't have a throttle butterfly (well, very few do) so there's no "pressure wave" to stall the turbine, or vacuum signal in the manifold to trigger it's operation.
