tightening a wheel bearing?

Hi all,

I need to tighten a wheel bearing on the front passenger side wheel. Having ever had to do it before, can someone please give me some sort of step by step idea.

Any Help would be much appreciated and owning a hilux its probably not going to be the last time i have to pull the front hub/CV/axle assembly out. Surprised i havent had to do it yet.

Gregories manual only 30 dollars and youll be able to pull the whole car apart and put it back together.

You only have to remove the locking hub to access the outer wheel bearing and adjustment.

Pull the wheel off
Unlock the hub and take off the small 10mm (?) bolts, pull the locking mechanism off.
Undo the next lot of bolts (12mm) around the outside of the locking hub housing. The washers behind them are cone washers and the easiest way to get them out is to belt the housing next to them with a hammer. I like to keep the nuts just on the end so you don't lose them as they can come off like a projectile.
Pull the locking hub assembly off and you can see the end of the cv. Around it is the outer hub nut, then a locking washer, then the main hub nut against the bearing.
Using a hub socket is the easiest way to undo/do up the large hub nuts ($17 on ebay) Take off the outer one and remove the locking washer (straighten the locking tabs with screwdriver)
Use the hub socket to tighten the inner nut to the right spec.
Put it all back on in reverse order ;)

Note: This is a rough off the memory job, and it may vary slightly (circlips etc?) as i'm running IFS hubs on the live axle.

a better way to get the cone washers out is use a bit of brass or copper round bar place it on the end of the stud and hit the other end with a hammer, short, sharp hits works well. This way you dont deform the housing.

The socket size youll want is 54mm, dont use a screw driver and hammer to get the nuts off (you cant tighten them properly this way anyway)

And youll need to take the circlip off the end of the cv.

I did this tonight and it took me about an hour for both sides.

Got a link for the $17 socket? all the ones i can find at $40 plus postage....


A torque wrench is also usefull, or u can tighten them up just enough to remove movement in the wheel when u place your hands at 12 and 6 oclock.

I'm sure I saw one on there for $17. There's one at the moment for $19 but it's cheap and nasty (like the $17 one) and doesn't use a socket, I think you put a bar or screwdriver through it to turn it.
