Road driving in low range...

Hey guys.

I have a 96 Coil Sierra with a 4AGE 20v on 30's. The wheels combined with the different toyota gearbox mean that for acceleration on the road, things just aren't that special. 2nd gear doesn't rev out until 90k/h which is great for people who want top speed, but sucks for acceleration. When I slip it into low range, front hubs unlocked, it basically goes nuts on the road with 5th gear giving you a cruising speed of 80k/h at 4500rpm.

Now I'm never going to do this permanently, but is there actually any additional wear and tear or a good reason not to give it some stick in low range once a week or so? I know the front drive shaft will be spinning the front diff, so you're losing power and using more petrol than just rwd, but is there actually anything about the low range gearing or being in low range that makes this highly unadvised?

The front axles will be spinning aswell . It has never been recomended to drive in 4wd with the hubs unlocked .
If you realy want to get low range , do the 2wd low range mod ( take the selector ball out ) then you can zoom around to your hearts contect in 2 wd low .
No idea if it would break anything thou . , only your right foot would do it thou .

Why not just get some gearing for it?

yeh I agree, some deep gearing like 6.1:1 will lower your high range significantly and give awesome offroad gearing too.

If I decide to hang on to the car for a while, then gearing will be done for sure but not in my current financial state. Thanks though.

bit off topic some one told me before i select 4x4 i should lock my hubs i 2wd and drive a bit to warm up the grease it the hubs. is this right

I don't worrie about it and have not heard of it before!

The Coily might have different diff ratios to an NT ? but the problem sounds like the gearbox...might be easier / cheaper to find another one if you dont want to change your Xfer box.

I have a Toyota 3A (same block as the 4A but way less power) / Celica Gearbox / standard Xfer / 30's and do 3300 rpm at 100kph in 5th, and first is not too tall.

What revs are you doing when "2nd gear doesn't rev out until 90kph"

I think ratios in coilys are same as NT. 3.9s

Could also get a 1L case as they are 12% lower i think than a std case. also need the arms to convert your chain case.

a good way to go would be to change to a 1L tcase puts you almost back to standard low gearing, also do yourself a favor and get rid of the chain tcase there really weak even if you put an older 1.3 tcase trust me its worth doing.
