Hey guys, my Lux was in need of a new engine, its got a 2L-T in it at the moment but would like to put in a 3L like standard, do all the accessories such as starters, alternators etc etc fit up to a 3L from the 2L-T?

The 2L and 3L engines are exactly the same block, the only difference is the capacity.

A 2L-T and a 3L-T are the same engines with Turbos attached.

This means that not only will your starter, etc, all still suit but you should be able to bolt on the turbo, etc, and still have a turbo engine.

However, I have heard that the 2L-T turbo is slightly smaller than what you would normally mount on a 5L (the 3 litre engine in the series) so if the same thing applies to a 3L (the 2.8 litre), the turbo might be a little small (in capacity, not physical dimensions) to get the most benefit.

Do a bit of checking cause I think the stud patterns on the exhaust manifold are different between the 2L & 3L motors.

no such thing as a 3L-T. both 3L and 5L are atmo only.

which motor.......??

if you have a 2lt at the moment then i would go to 3L (assuming the 2lt is beyound repair). if possible pull the turbo off the 2lt and stick it on the 3L :) the 3l has about the same power as the 2lt in stock form. however it easy to wind the boost up for more.

whats wrong with the existing motor? i assume its not the "E" version.

Its a 2L-T, not the E one.

Rather bad knock in #1 cylinder, was just going to replace the whole engine rather then rebuild it.

if thats all thats wrong with it why not just get a 3L reco'd block. it proberly cheaper to reco it than to buy a decent replacement motor.

the thing that trips people up on 2l- 3l conversions is the aircon mounting. i'm sure there is a post on it somewhere.

No aircon, so not overly worried about that.

No aircon, so not overly worried about that.
it depends on which 2L-T you have - the early ones with the aluminium rocker cover, the head will not just bolt on. the later ones (1989 on approx - steel rocker cover like 3L) it will fit BUT the combustion chambers etc are small even for 2.4 litre, and it will choke a 2.8 - you will make awesome torque to about 2500rpm then it will be a dog. the CT20 off a 2L-T is too small for a 3L, it's too small even for the 2L-T. you can use the manifolds if you have the later 2L-T but you will need to get a bigger turbo for it to work well. you can use the fuel pump off a 2L-T for a 3L, you have to calibrate it for the bigger motor.

DD,

You got some more information on this as I had heard this as well but when I asked the local diesel place for a price to swap em over for me if I supplied the 2L-T pump they said they wont fit but I could take the compensator off the 2LT pump and fit that to my 3L pump but the cost of $880 scared me off :(

just on the recalibration topic. does anyone know somewhere decent in melb that calibrates pumps. i mean properly not dodgy bastards that just wind up the pump? cheers all

it is straight forward conversion, given that yours is a non efi pump. you are right in thinking why reco a 2.4, when a 2.8 bottom end will fit, it has a bit more torque due to the increased stroke, 3L and 5L use the same crank, so if yoy can get a 3L cheap enough go for it.
As for pumps, they are all based on the VE style pumps, the problem you will have with getting a pump done is that there is no timing or injection volume specs for a 3L with a turbo. I have done two of these type of conversions and all I did was strip the pump, changed all seals, drive rubbers etc, drillled out the orifice on the boost compenstor, then bolted up with the timing set mark to mark. Then I have taken it to a dyno and basically ran it up to set the baseline, non compensated power, to set the timing, they seem to like a few degrees advanced, not a lot but a bit more noticeable diesel knock at idle, then boost compensater connected and you can adjust, the injection volume across the range as well as the compensater has different ramps to adjust, just by rotating the slide pin.
I got most of my info of the surf assn site, a bloke named terry_syd seems to have really sorted this out,
One good tip, put the surf oil cooler on as the filters flow better as well as put in a really good 4 core radiator, as the heat is what kills these motors, if you are after a lot of power, these aren't the engines to bother with, but a good all round donk with ok fuel economy and performance

I have been offered a 3L with good compression with around 160,000km's on it for $2600, or I can spend another grand and get a reconditioned one.

And get, I have a mechanical 2L, not the E.

I am not after a lot of power, but when I am chasing it I will just put a Commo V6 into it.
