Another ZD30TD Problem
Another ZD30TD Problem
Don't know if anyone else has had this problem with their 3.0lt but I just
did.
Timing case oil leak. Doesn't sound much, but when the oil stuffed the harmonic balancer I wasn't happy.
Got a new balancer and fitted it, now the oil leak, to fix it the engine has to come out ,3 to 4 days at the dealer.
After a few heated discussions and telling them where to stick the GU,
Nissan will cover the cost ($1900- $2500), and I found this is comon problem they've been doing one a week for the last six months.
Just something to look for if you have one.

So what is the fix then if it is a common problem. If they are doing 1 a week what is the mod? Or do you have to change something regular like.
How many k's on the truck?

Lukey,
what year model is your truck?
How many Kms?
I just had my motor replaced under warranty nissan came to the party, they put a 2003 long motor in and I asked If they had fixed all of the problems that was in the earlyer motors.
They reckon they have!
A friend of mine is a spare parts sales rep and he has also been to just about every nissan dealership in NSW and asked if they have fixed the PROBLEMS that the earlyer motors had, they also say they havebeen fixed ( we will wait and see )
After I picked the truck up nissan told me how _ucked the motors are, out of there mouths
Like if you have a leaking sump you have to pull the gearbox out to get to 3 bolts that are in the bellhousing
The engine No is on the head ( how east is it o find a bottom end to fix most of the problems that these motors have)
There is an air sensor on the air intake that one little peice of dust will stuffup and I was told that it is approx $1000 to replace.
the list goes on
let us know how your truck goes

Oil leaks? Poor economy due to poor quality fuel in AUS (unable to achieve proper atomisation, to make good use of unit injectors)? Air sensors that stuff up with small amounts of dust? Doesn't sound like a real practical motor for AUS conditions. Sounds like it would be better suited to a clean room environment, than in use as a 4wd motor. I'm sorry for your inconvenience and misfortune all 3.0 owners, but give me my 'old fashioned' pushrod, 2 valves per cylinder, mechanical and indirectly injected, naturally asthmatic TD42 anyday.
Built, not bought.
Its a late 2000 model so its not the small sump version, it'd be nice if it
was still under new car waranty but shes done 168,000kms now.
Your right about the gear box having to come off to get at the rear sump
bolts. The sump has to come off to get the timing case off and the list goes on.
The problem is common but its not.
They tell me that when the motors are put together not enough sealant
is used around the gaskets in the timing case, Not all GU's are affected
mine must have been built on a strike day at the factory.
This can happen at any stage 30-40-50,000kms or more as ive just found
out, not all will do it guess im a lucky one.
Anyway once its fixed apparently it won't happen agian.

This just about takes the biscuit. You get an oil leak at 168,000 Kms ! Well, what's the issue. Nothing lasts forever. Just be glad you didn't buy a Landrover you would have had oil leaks as you drove off with your new car. Personally I would take my 3.0 over a 2.8 or 4.2 anyday. The resale value is excellent and I'll be selling it long before any of the problems come into play.

LOL I'd take a series 1 LR over a 3.0.. to each their own.

Who is this getting poor fuel economy?
I would've thought 11.5 ltr to the 100k's is pretty good on a truck with 33 muds and weighs over 3 ton loaded up at 100kph - 110kph

I love my 3.0 GU. The alternator went on it the other day. 1 DAY before the warranty ran out. STORY: I drove my youngest one to school on the thursday morning, noticed the battery light & subtank lights were still on thought this was not too good better tell Chad when i get to work. After taking little one up to class, tried to start patrol, there wasn't even enough juice to turn engine over one turn! (I only live about a 1 min drive from school) RACQ rescues me, tells me I need new alternator. Chad rings nissan they say bring it in but we wont have a car till mid next week if we're lucky. Worst thing is that Big daughter has formal on Friday night. Thurs nite, chad decides to pull alternator out, clean up brushes etc, takes about 30 mins, car fixed. The worst thing about it all was I had to drive my suzi as the family car all day thursday, & even though she's far easier to park, I've turned into a creature of comfort & really missed the air con, cd player, & power everything!
If we can put one man on the moon, why can't we put them all there!!
timing case leak
really didnt need to read this post dropped my 2002 gu of at nissan today for the same problem .rang at lunch time to see if everything was ok was told they,d look at it next .went to pick it up at 4 and was told I hadnt dropped it off early enough this morning. I explained that i thought 630 was pretty early . guess I,ll get all the good news tommorow. Ive still got warranty for two more weeks so. they,ll be happy

Go the mighty ZD30!!!!!!!!!!!
More than happy with mine with 268,000kms on the clock. The only spanner which has been laid on mine was to undo and do up the sump plug. I guess there are lemons in all cars. 4.2 TD 100 series L/C no different. Two turbos and a cracked head at 7,300kms is pretty piss poor not to mention IFS dramas.... and for what $25k more.
