bought the remote face (tx3400 ?) for $150 at auction - as new... had to get aerial (GME interchangable 4/6db) for $70 plus $10 to get police channels (so sweet! best investment of 10 bucks ever!). so all up $230. good deal...

moral - have a look around. saw a tx3xxx(?) for $150 inc aerial in trading post not so long ago too.

I would go the 3400 it has the remote face and a few more features than the 3200 but is a fair bit dearer. :D

The 3400 is more expencive than the 4400 (including extra 20 recive ch's).

I would only go for the 3400 if space is an issue.

nice score :D
in regards to aerial, depends what you mainly do with the vehicle you put it on, lower db for hilly terrain.etc
6db is a pretty safe all-rounder though.

yeah i mainly wheel in hill terrain toolangi bunyip etc
cant go outback with a 60 too thirsty
got another 4b for that
whats betta tall or small aerieal s
i might settle for a 5db aerial that way i can wheel in the hills and use it round town fro cops etc

the aerial size generally depends on what db it is.
from what you sound like you'll be doing, a 4.5db one will do the trick - small & flexible for hitting stuff offroad and enough for the times you're on the black stuff round town.
one final point i think i should make is the brand of aerial you choose - they say you can tell the difference between dick smith and GME... i haven't tested this theory however.

Thor,
you sound like you know a bit about uhfs. What do you mean by getting police channels. I am looking at getting a uhf and the tx3200 seemed like a good price. There is also a uniden uh012 for a reasonable price. Are there many (any) differences between these brands for performance/features etc. The police channel thing would be very handy I think....

fatass75 there are 3 models (tx3400/4400/6200) made by GME that have programmable recieve channels. a local communications distributer should be able to program these to recive police channels. (there are rules about this - you're only allowed to listen and not use the information you hear ;) )
about which model to choose i'm not familiar with the uniden model, but its writeup seems basically the same as the 3200 and it's $80 bucks cheaper. based on what you'll use it for, the cheaper option may be the way to go.
i have used both uniden and gme and never had a problem with either.

The 4400 is user programmable, that is, you can program in 20 extra receive only channels.. the 3400 and 6200 is software programmable... any GME dealer should be able to program it for you. You just need to get a list of the frequencies you would like.
