Am i out of my mind?
Am i out of my mind?
I want a suzi. Both for a DD and a weekend warrior/trail rig. Maybe compete in entry level in comps.
I would be selling the GU (air con, 33's, comfort, space, seats, roof) for a no top, 1.3 ltr carby shoebox on wheels. But it means i could wheel the piss out of it and not worry about panel damage...
Im kinda worried about the 3.0Ltr TD in the patrol (6 yrs, 120k's still goin strong) with all their apparent reliability issues...
So i either keep it, gear the diffs and go 35's on a 20 something thousand dollar car that i won't wheel to its full potential, (but run the risk of an engine replacement) or sell it and fit 33's on a (sprung under, im in qld) zuk...
I previously thought about the jeep, but id still be too much of a pussy to seriously off-roading something worth that sort of money...
Just an idea. Your thoughts on what i should do? I don't have the dollars to do both, or i would![/i]

you'll regret it.
They are not fun daily's. I don't poke a stick at mine unless I am heading to the trails, or have just cleaned it and am cutting roofless laps on the esplanade.
But as we all know, on the trails they are gold. and are far more fun than most, and I endlessly lay mine over, because i can, due to the cost reasons you speak of.
They are not quite so fun when you wake up monday morning to your noisy, dusty, possibly soaking-rain filled car to go to work, or friday night dressed nice to pick up that cute girl for dinner...
You have a nice GU, just realise that its only paint and panel, drive it forever, it is built strong and will serve you well.
For me, my dad, and my bro, the only solution we came to, after years of vehicles where we compromised the use of - keep nice, valuable daily's and also entry level comp vehicles, was to own two vehicles each. Costly and impractical in many senses, but we are all happy.
We all now drive full size nissan's for daily's and have two comp ready zooks and one comp ready shorty GQ.
If you can afford to do the diffs and 35's on the patrol, seriously consider keeping the nissan as is, and build a zook with the cash, slowly gather parts, and build one cheap, there have been quite a few build ups like this lately on this board.

I have mine got f&r lockers winch blah blah blah. I get my P's in feb and am thinking of another car! I'm an app carpenter and theres not really enough room for that!
I'll keep the zook(Cheap build and go's were i want!) and buy a hilux or something that you don't have to spend money on and just go spastic on the zook !
So depends what your job is but for me the zook isn't the best thing. I think if you are just driving around town it's actually pretty cool just like a big go kart!

Built swb sierra, building a lwb sierra ute and have a dmax for family camping
Keep the gu no matter what you do. Im 17, an app carpenter and my dd for bit over a year was a zook (locked, bit of lift and tube etc). It was sweet for a while, but then I needed space which i had none of and highway driving was farked. Not to mention the rough as guts ride, no aircon etc etc. Got a hilux now and it is so much better.
You can pick up zooks for practically nothing, if your gunna rape it you'll want an old shitter so cheap cheap. Cheap to mod, you can do alot of it yourself. You could have yourself a tough zook, that is very capable for not much coin at all really. Just spend your money wisely and all should work out sweet.

its funny because i always cop it from the GF ..... rock up to go out in the good cloaths and all ..... in my zook ute covered in dirt and mudwaxhead.. wrote: friday night dressed nice to pick up that cute girl for dinner...
the room side of the question doesn't bother me only me and my gf go in it and all the stuff goes in the box on the tray so yeah ... good reason to get one and give it the chop
howay driving is the only down bit i can think of having an 1.3 screaming its head off to get the 31's turning at 100 and its alittle bit of a slug on the going up the hills on the hiway .... solution 1.6 efi (coming soon)
anyways i would get rid of the nissian before it goes boom

I have had a GU (4.5) and a Zuk at the same time .. The Zuk was "built" with a warm 1.6 35's locker, gears etc .. SPOA blah blah ..
The patrol was stock apart from 33's and a decent exhaust.. I loved the Zuk and still miss it .. but my patrol was written off a few months back .. and I want the GU more than I want the sierra back .. but I will bulid another "Zuk type vehicle" .. well a sierra body anyway ...

I would sell your GU because it has the dreaded 3ltr.
Zooks as DD suck big time as well. You want something you can go and bust up and drive hard on the weekends then not have to worry that you cant drive it to work on Monday.
I would get your self a cheap zook and then another DD like a Commodore or something that is capable of towing your zook to comps etc and is comfortable around town.

i just bought my 3rd zook and it owes me $200 bucks.
1.3L standard everything in pieces just needs putting back together.
Dont sell the Patrol buy a cheap zook and a trailer and wheel the absolute shit out of it.
I have a work car which will be my tow vechile and that way i can just give the zook hell.
I may not be competitive but i'll be entertaining.

Whats even better is the condition of the body. The guy who owned it previous bought two zuks pulled all the good stuff off to make one and run out of money.
My fiancee may kill me but other wise its all good.

I have both a Gu and a zook, there is no way I could drive my zook daily, it depends on the wind if I do 100kmh. Keep you goo, buy a cheap zook, weld the ass and go have some fun!
you know you want one
You could build a reasonable Hilux for the same sort of money as a zook. Parts are easier to find, heaps of off the shelf mods available and a little more room.
I've built a Vitara (can be done but need live axle), Sierra (not for road use) and my Hilux (comp use). Also have a GU that i'm selling as well. GU's suck a$$ slow thirsty buckets of poo.
Saying that, GU vs Zook as a daily driver......I'd drive the GU for comfort or build a hilux.

I have my zook ,and a motorbike (road bike). Unless the weather is really crappy, or i need to take something or someone somewhere, its bike time. Have daily driven the zook for a while, and its not much fun. I probably get almost as wet and dirty in the zook as the bike.

Older zooks are so cheap, I can't link selling the truck with buying a zook.
If the big truck ain't working for you, sell it by all means, buy a dunny door or something more useable and cheaper to run.
My zooks a daily driver and is fine round town, brilliant off road, but crappy on long fast highways.
I often lust after comfort and such offered by bigger trucks, until I smash a corner or a light on the zook, and know it don't matter.
(An older Pootrol backed into my zook recently, cost him $250 for a tail light assembly, and cost me zilch)
If you want to go hard off road, and don't wanna carry more than 2 tins of lemonade, then a zook is brilliant.
But as said, its still not so much fun, if you are scared to wheel it, cause you need it for work on Mondays.

Build up a series 1 JX Jimny..... capable off road (Rockhopper III, body lift, 32's etc) comfy and dry inside, air conditioning, electrics, nice fabric seats and is still good on the road....
I thump mine around on weekends and still use it as a daily-driver, can be filthy on the outside but inside stays pristine.

ok,
thanks for the advice all. I suck at making decisions
The comfort of the patrol as a dd is good. But finacially i liked the idea of having 1 car (1 x insurance, 1 x rego) and have it a capable offroader for weekends, without worrying about panel damage etc.
Also, it needs to be registered for park use. It seems to me that it would be a bit of a waste to have a registered car, sit there in the driveway all week. I don't feel i would get enough use out of it (ie. every weekend) to justify the cost and rego etc. If I drove it daily, and used it up the beach (only need an esky, chair and strap surfboard to the roof), and also decent wheeling trips once or twice a month, I would consider that making good use of it.
If it was unregistered i would need a trailer for it, and cant wheel it in parks etc. May as well have a buggy, which i cant afford, and dont have the space for either on a trailer...
Its going to have to be a fairly decent rig, if im going to dd it and wheel it, which is another problem for me in QLD with dot/cops.
I Want:
WT Soft top
Lifted, shackles, bodylift (SPUA)
33's (cut guards & bushwacker flares)
Power steer
Diff gears & rockhoppers
6 point cage
Front & rear bars & sliders
Winch
Bucket seats?
Maybe even injection or 1.6 down the track...
Hmmm, Motorbike hey?
A killer zuk and a triumph daytona 675 is a thought...

Got one. Work is very close, and there are work vehicles available... But I still need to use my own vehicle from time to time. Or, I Suppose i could sell the troll and hassle the boss for a work car!Get a pushy = no reg
Takes away worry of getting to work if ya busted zook, or even if you just wanna mod it and don't finish b4 Monday..
True. and would help me get off my arse and actually use a pushy

If I couldn't have two cars, this would most likely be my choice.
+ DEEV8, don't put 33's on WT Sierra diffs, it will not be reliable offroad (Qld conditions) and will not be highway friendly...
From my experience most zook owners can break a CV on demand with 31's, 33's - no way...

I was thinking of carrying spare cv's and just seeing how they go. If i found i am breaking too many etc, then i was gonna look at lux diffs etc.
This would be even worse though, in terms of legality (spoa, lux diffs, etc)...
anyone know of legal/engineering issues with swapping diffs in QLD? can/can't be done?
I suppose it wouldn't be too bad being a weekend car (if i managed to score a company car ) but still would suck if i got pulled over by someone with a bit of a clue, even if it was a good job/made to look factory as possible.

your only allowed 2 inchs more on diffs thats why NT can get WT under them ... dunno how much wider lux diffs areDEEV8 wrote:I was thinking of carrying spare cv's and just seeing how they go. If i found i am breaking too many etc, then i was gonna look at lux diffs etc.
