STD diffs and 33's

Post by CWBYUP »

I've been thinking about putting 33's under the zuk.

Its SPOA high steer 2" body lift with 2 inch shackels.

What are the things to consider ? Do i need more lift ?

just trying to get thoughts together if i want to do it or not.

I will need gears but what else ?

spare Cv's  should be fine
shouldn't need the 8 inches of lift to fit 33's though
4 or 5 with some trimming and you should fit 33's

Atraight SPOA will fit with a bit of thinking and a slight trim. Lifting past SPOA is jut asking for instability. If anything you will want less lift.

The hopeful plan is to fit gears and 33's over x - mas and then if i can take the body lift out if it.

Thanks for the help guys keep it coming.

Moose I am so curious as to how? no one else I know does it, and CV's regularly blow on most WT's on 31's... do you drive mainly mud?

And I am not having a dig.

are you replaceing your CV'S with genuine suzuki? Lots of zooks in the club have 31's and I cant remember any breakages on this size with 1.3 liter stuff. the guys with 33+ size tyres tend to break stuff on the odd occasion. in victoria though there is only limited rock, compared to mud/clay/ruts type stuff but we still find it and drive it.

I ran 36" TSLs on my zook locked fornt and rear, sure I broke a couple of CVs, but rarely.

33's are fine, just love it a little and it will love you back.

If the CV's are cheep chinese one they will die verry quick!

I think zook CV's are made by NTN, I think  same matirial as patrol ones, and replacement ones may be avalible at a reasnable price.

Ill look into it.

Question:

Are NT & WT CV's the same, if not fitting wise, then strength wise?
What about the rest of the diff (centres & axle) strength?

NT & WT are the same, though 1ltr CV's are smaller but you can put 1.3 axles and CV's in a 1ltr.

Centres are pretty good, I never busted one, people bust 1ltr ones sometimes and if you run vitara 5.12 gears, the pinions could break cuz they are small, never seen one broken though.

Zook CV's are NTN from what I can find, should be able to get em through hardy spicer. they sell patrol ones and they are pretty well priced.

they are genuine CV's

I never blew a CV running 34" Swampers and front and rear lockers but that is in Victorian conditions where we have a lot of low traction driving not on rock

Drove the boulders and the deep ruts after that, not a problem,
Ok we drive low traction ie mud, in vic but I wouldnt say that tracks like jacksons break, the boulders and others like that are low traction. on that compacted dirt you would often have more traction than rock cuz the tyres have got something to bight into.

Hay, I drive rock

Only time I've broken a C/V with my 31 12.5 boggers is snatching a 3 ton Nissan in reverse on full lock :-)
I do use birfield rings tho

I blew my front diff centre (stripped of all the teeth on the gears) running 31's in sand dunes, stock 1.3, stock gears. Though i did launch it on the road in 4wd a couple of weeks before which i think damaged them. I welded it back together and havnt had any problems since. Its been welded for almost 2 years now.
